Ella Virginia Auguste was born on 11 May 1870 at Richmond, Virginia. She was the daughter of Benjamin "Ben" Tappan August and Gertrude Ellis Shell. Ella Virginia Auguste was christened in Sep 1870 at Richmond, Henrico Co, Virginia. She married Custis Russell Perry, son of Rev William James Perry I and Martha Harriet "Hattie" Ruff Martin, on 27 Jan 1898 at Grace Methodist Episcopal Church, Maryland.1 Ella Virginia Auguste died on 19 Oct 1971 at Washington, District of Columbia, at age 101. She was buried at Thornrose Cemetery, Staunton, Virginia.
Ella "Ow" Virginia August was born in the old part of Richmond, VA, about 8th Street she thought. She was named after her mother's sister. As a child Ella went through the diseases of the times: scarlet fever on 1 Oct 1874 and 30 May 1876 whooping cough. On 8 Dec 1874 her mother noted Ella was visiting her grandmother; this was Rebecca Hunt Southall Shell because her paternal grandmother was living out of the state. Ella and her brothers attended St. James Church in Richmond, VA as children; she went to the Madison School and Mr. Powell's Richmond Female Seminary. She was confirmed 29 Mar 1896 by Rev Father in God Henry Y. Satterlee, D.D. Bishop of Washington and F. B. MacKay-Smith, rector. Ella is noted in the 1940 federal census as completing four years of high school.

When she was a girl in Richmond, Ella's family lived on fashionable Franklin Street in what is now a university neighborhood. When it snowed the neighborhood was very gay with pretty girls in sleighs with bells being driven around; she sometimes was given a ride by family friends. In 1877 she was presented to President and Mrs. Hayes when they visited Richmond.

Ella was a beautiful young woman with dark brown hair who gained a considerable reputation as a pianist and violinist in an era in which women did not undertake careers. She was quite popular in Richmond, VA society. In 1895 she came to Washington DC from Richmond to study music as a pupil of Josef Kasper and boarded with the Kasper family.

In 1898 Ella and Custis Russell Perry supposedly eloped and were married by Rev. Miller at Grace Methodist Episcopal Church in Baltimore, MD. Why that church was chosen is a mystery. The August family had long-time family friends living in Baltimore. In 1888 a Rev Elbert S. Tood of Grace Methodist Episcopal Church attended the funeral of Rev John Satchell Martin as did Custis Russell Perry, his grandson. However, that particular Grace Methodist Episcopal Church no longer existed in Baltimore by 1990; the only church with a similar name, Grace African Methodist Church had Rev Travers and Young in 1888 -- no Rev Tood or Rev Miller. This researcher wondered if Ella and Custis instead married at one of the extant Episcopal churches in Richmond; Rev Miller was not working at Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church; St. Andrew's Episcopal Church; or St. Paul's Episcopal Church in 1898.

Ella and Russell settled in Washington, DC with her husband and they boarded at 2020 G St NW and then 1708 G St NW, and then lived at 1729 G St NW. Ella went to Richmond, VA in Sep 1898 for the upcoming the birth of her daughter, and then moved to 610 21st Street in Mar 1899. In 1905 she visited family at 1202 Floyd Avenue in Richmond, VA which may have been her father's home. Finally Ben and Ella purchased 2018 G Street where their resided until their deaths.

Ella was exceedingly interested in both her and her husband's family history; she collected bits of information from her elders and paid professional genealogists to gather additional data, the majority of which was likely a disappointment to her. She had a drawing made of the Cedar Grove plantation home of the Christian-Tyler family in New Kent Co, VA to use for her bookplate and did not know she was descended from a different part of that same Christian family. Ella provided the focus and encouragement to make genealogy a life-long passion for this researcher, her great granddaughter Virgina Custis Winslett.

Ella became a member of numerous organizations: the General Lewis A. Armistead Chapter #2136 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy District of Columbia Division on the basis of the service of Major Albert Nicholas Auguste; the Margaret Whetten Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) of which she was at one time Regent; the District of Columbia Officers' Club of the DAR; the Political Study Club; the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities; the Vicksburg, MS and Warren County Historical Society; Epiphany Episcopal Church; and a lifetime member of the Women's City Club. A devotee to things Virginian, Ella accumulated and enjoyed her large collection of books on Virginia history and created extensive scrapbooks containing invitations to balls and events she attended at the White House as well as many other locales. She participated in the purchase and restoration of Woodlawn, the old Nelly Custis Lewis estate mansion in Fairfax Co, VA by serving as a docent on occasion. At the Hobby Show for the Women's City Club she exhibited her collection of tiny Chinese dolls, a small part of her total doll collection.

Ella was called "Ow" by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a named derived from the children trying to pronounce Ella. She lived at 2018 G St NW, Washington, DC from November 1906 until her death. Her will was probated in Washington, DC.1,5,2
