Thomas Atkinson I was born c 1608 at Bradley, Lincolnshire, England. He was the son of Matthew Atkinson I and Margaret (Unknown). Thomas Atkinson I was christened on 29 Jan 1608 at Bradley, Lincolnshire. He immigrated in 1635 to Virginia. He married Mary (Unknown) a 1636. Thomas Atkinson I died a 1641.
Thomas Atkinson immigrated to Virginia in 1635; his brothers and other relatives arrived in 1634-1635. "13 July 1635, These underwritten names are to be transported to Virginia, embarked in the Alice, with Richard Orchard. The men have taken oaths of allegiance and supremacies. Includes Tho. Atkinson, age 27." (Hotten, p. 109.)

Boone Family Immigrants stated Thomas married Sarah Gwaltney (1627, James City Co - 1687, Isle of Wight Co, VA), the daughter of Thomas Gwaleney and Martha Merriott of Wales; however court records show clearly that Thomas was married to a Mary until his death and Thomas was only alive in Virginia during the time of the birth of his three children, one of which stated his mother was the widow Gwaltney. Many researchers have tried to compact the Atkinson generations, going from Thomas born in circa 1608 to James born in circa 1660, and skipping Thomas born in circa 1641, thus leading to confusion on how the Gwaltney daughter married into the family. It was the Thomas Atkinson in the next generation who married a Susannah Gwaltney

Given Thomas' 1608 birth and 1635 immigration dates and the age of his widow Mary when she was in court in 1666, Thomas and Mary's children's birth dates cannot be as early as some researchers proposed.

Mary (Unknown) was born c 1617. She married Thomas Atkinson I, son of Matthew Atkinson I and Margaret (Unknown), a 1636. Mary (Unknown) married Thomas Gwaleney a 1642 at James City Co, Virginia. Mary (Unknown) married Thomas Pitman c 1667 at Surry Co, Virginia.
The 1666 document filed in court by Thomas and Mary's son James Atkinson proved his father Thomas was not married to a Martha Marriott, unless that was during another marriage. The document showed Thomas' wife Mary was first married to James' father Thomas Atkinson, then to James' father-in-law Thomas Gwaltney, and third was married to Thomas Pitman. "Conditions agreed upon between Capt. Thos. Pitman and Mrs. Mary Gualtney, before marriage. Thos. Pitman gives bond that the Widdowe Gaultney after marriage with him, shall have the whole disposal of a horse and mare which she now has to dispose of at her own pleasure, as also two pewter dishes and cattle, now called and known to be for the two youngest children, also her youngest son, Wm. Gwaltney, may have two years' schooling. Signed: Thos. Pitman. Witnesses: Roger Potter, Luke Mizelle." (Surry Co, VA Court Records, Book 1, pg. 281, 4 Oct 1666.) The assumption from this was Mary had at least three children: Susannah, William and an unknown daughter who married an Atkinson.

Mary apparently testified in the case of a bastard child. "Marye Gualtney, aged 48 or thereabouts, saith that today five weeks or soe about, Goodman Bartley came unto her and said that his wife was not well, but when she came found that Ann Simpson had a female child, etc. Katherine Clarke, age 36 years, also testified and said that Goodman Gualtney came to her before she was up, to tell her that Good Bartlett's daughter had this child. Dorothy Barlett, aged 50 years testified about this matter." (Surry Co, VA Court Records, Book 1, pg. 273, 30 Jun 1666.)

Col. Arthur Allen was born in 1608 at Droitwich, Worcestershire, England. He was the son of John Allen. Col. Arthur Allen was christened on 23 Oct 1608 at Saint Andrew, Droitwich, Worcestershire, England. He married Alice Tucker, daughter of Unknown Tucker, a 1629 at Isle of Wight Co, Virginia. Col. Arthur Allen immigrated in 1649 to Virginia. He died b 16 Feb 1669 at Surry Co, Virginia.
Col. Arthur Allen was a merchant-planter in Tidewater Virginia. By 1649 Arthur was in James City Co, VA. On 13 Mar 1649 he received 200 acres between Lawnes Creek and Chippoakes Creek in Surry Co, VA for bringing four people to the colony -- William Moss, William Eyres, Thomas Rastell and Alice Tucker, whom Arthur later married. Arthur was appointed one of the Justices of the Peace for Surry Co, VA when it was formed in 1652 and was one of the wealthiest men in the county and may have been the wealthiest. The quit rent rolls showed him to be the largest landholder in Surry Co, possessing 6,780 acres. Two of the most prominent and oldest homes in the county were built by Arthur.

A Humphrey Allen was noted in Surry County Court records at the same time as Arthur. Account of Mr. James Taylor, deceased by Ja. Mason, Wm. Batt. ... (includes) Mr. Humph. Allen, Mr. Arthur Allen...many others." (Surry Co, VA Book 1, p. 66, Jun 1655) John Rawlings of Martin's Brandon, for himself and Wm. Scarbrough hath surveyed and assigned all rights to Mr. Humphrey Allen in a certain patent of land." (Surry Co, VA Book 1, p. 238, 20 Jun 1664) Indenture between Roger Delke... and William Bulter ... to where Humphrey Allen lived." (Surry Co, VA Book 1, 4 Jul 1671). Of note a Humphrey Allen was christened on 14 Jan 1609 in the same English town as Col. Allen had been, too close in time to John' christening to be his sibling.

Many references were made to Arthur Allen in the Surry Co Court Records. "Bro. Cockerman, Pray be please to confess a Judgement to Arthur Alle." (Book 1, p. 53, no date) "At the Court in Southwarke Parish for the County: Commissioners Capt. Geo. Jordan, Capt. Wm. Cockerham, Mr. Arthur Allen, Mr. Johnn for 539 lbs. of tobacco. Your loving sister, Eliza. Shepherd. Recorded 1654 Carker." (Surry Co, VA Book 1, p. 167, 1660) At a meeting of the Vestry of Southwarke Parish and Lawn Creek Parish present were ... for Lawnes Creek Parish, included... Arthur Allen." (Surry Co, VA Book 1, p. 168, 24 May 1661)

In 1655 at age 57 Arthur built his magnificent brick home called The Brick House on his 200 acre tract. After Bacon's Rebellion in 1676 this home became known as Bacon's Castle.

On 3 Oct 1661 Allen purchased 500 acres from John and Peleg Dunstan, the sons and heirs of John Dunstan, between Lower Chippokes and Lawns Creek adjoining his 1649 patent. On 24 Aug 1665 Arthur patented 1,000 acres in the vicinity.

Arthur had 11 tithables in the 1668 tax list which was more than anyone else in the county. On 7 July 1668 Arthur testified that he was 60 years old which was supported by the christening record found. "Thomas Hoge, age 23, deposed about a horse...Wm. Dowling, about 50 years, made a Deposition concerning a conversation between Mr. Richard Lawrence and Mr. Robert Williamson at Court ... Arthur Allen, age 60, testified that he and brother (in-law) went to James City to see a horse ... two horses for sale. The question of discussion being which horse died. Daniel Tucker, aged 55, testified that while at his brother (in-law) Allen's house, he saw the horse in Mr. Bland's and Mr. Carter's field, but presently saw it in his brother's field..." This citation includes Arthur Allen, his son-in-law, Robert Williamson and Daniel Tucker, the brother of his wife. (Surry Co, VA Records, Book 1 p 306, 7 Jul 1668)

Arthur left no will but his son-in-law Robert Williamson's 16 Feb 1669 will stated Robert wanted to be buried near his deceased father-in-law Arthur Allen. Arthur left his large home to his son Arthur in entail. Presumably, he gave other legacies to his daughters Joan, Mary and Elizabeth. Arthur and Alice reportedly had seven children which needs to be proven: Mary, Elizabeth, Katherine, Joan, Isabel, Arthur and one other son that died in 1662. After his death his wife Alice settled his estate. "Mrs. Alice Tucker Allen discharges Nicoholas Sessums of all claims and debts. Witnessess: Wm Newsum and John Thompson." (Surry Co, VA Records, Book 1, p. 405, 9 Mar 1670)

It is impossible to parse which of the other 8 Allen children christened by Arthur's father John Allen during an 18 year period at St. Peter's in Droitwich, England were Arthur's siblings because four children were christened within 3 weeks and 6.5 months of each other leading this researcher to conclude there were two households in that town lead by men named John Allen.

After Arthur's death during Bacon's Rebellion of 1676, the Allen home was seized by a party of rebels and fortified. On 29 Dec 1676 the house was captured by sailors from a ship in the James River who were engaged in putting down the rebellion. Arthur Allen's namesake son Major Allen and Robert Caufield, who had married Arthur's sister Elizabeth, were with Governor Berkeley. Bacon's men were finally driven out on 28 Dec 1677. Afterwards Allen and Caufield brought suit against some of the participants for damage.

Alice Tucker was born a 1607 at England. She was the daughter of Unknown Tucker. Alice Tucker married Col. Arthur Allen, son of John Allen, a 1629 at Isle of Wight Co, Virginia. Alice Tucker died a 1658 at Surry Co, Virginia. She married John Hardy a 1671 at Surry Co, Virginia. Alice Tucker died a 1685.
Widow Alice Tucker Allen married secondly John Hardy, a widower with three children, who in his 7 Oct 1675 will bequeathed to daughter Olive Driver, wife of Giles Driver and her two children; daughter Lucy Councill, wife of Hodges Councill and her three children; daughter Debora Hardy; "to my wife's grandchild John Johnson one cow when he comes to the age of Seventeen yeares"; sons-in-law Robert Burnett and William Mayo; and wife Alice, executrix. Witnesses: Richard Rennalds and Will Jenkins.

John Hardy died soon after his will was written in Oct 1675, and Alice was reported to be living again in The Brick House in Surry in Sep 1676 when that house was seized by Bacon's rebels and they threw her out. She then apparently returned to Isle of Wight Co and lived with her daughters until soon after giving her power of attorney to William Mayo in 1681.

On 11 May 1681 Alice Hardy noted "Know all men by these presents that I Alice Hardy of the Isle of Wight County, Spinster /doe constitute Ordain in my place & stead & for my use my welbeloved Sonn in Law / Wm May(o) my lawfull Attorney to ask demand receive & recover or seize att / such debts of Tob or any other effects shall be made appear due unto me From / any person or persons w’soever & upon not payment made to sue arrest implead cast / into prison & upon payment made to release discharge & give discharges in as / Full & ample manner as if I my selfe were present, as alsoe impowering my sd / Attorney to arrest implead any Tennant that hath Leased any Land of mine / that shall make any breach of any article imposed upon ye to performe in / their sd Lease, rattifieing & alloweing my sd Attorney in what he shall / act or doe in ye p’mises aforesd to be lawfull & right as if I my selfe were / present As witness my hand & Seal this 11th of May 1681. Jean Hirsch's hypothesis is Robert Burnett and William Mayo were not John Hardy's relatives as claimed on many online trees. If John Hardy had daughters Isabel who married William Mayo and Ann who married Robert Burnett, Isabel and Ann and their children would have been mentioned in his will as were John Hardy's other daughters. In that era, sons-in-law was one of the terms interchangeably used to designate step-sons, and Burnett and Mayo were Alice Tucker Allen Hardy's sons-in-law. Robert Burnett married Joan Allen and William Mayo was likely also Alice's step-son and married Isabel Allen because Robert Burnett in his will calls them both brothers. Will of Robert Burnett: daughter Ann Burnett 100 acres and the plantation my brother William Mayo lives on. Overseers: brothers Mr. Arthur Allen and Mr. Jno. Bromfield. Wife executrix. Witnesses: William Mayo, Roger Jones. Probated: 17 July 1679. Furthermore, on 11 May 1681 John Johnson and Hodges Council witnessed a power of attorney by Alice A. Hardy to her son-in-law William Mayo of Isle of Wight Co, VA.

Alice was living on the remainder of John Hardy's 1666 patent in 1686 when she was named as a neighbor to a new 240-acre patent to Thomas Harris Jr on her southwest corner. (Courtesy of Tom King)

Alice has several proposed sets of parents. Alice's father was noted as possibly Capt. Daniel Tucker (1575-1625) born in Milton-next-Gravesend, Kent; stockholder in the Virginia Company of London; came to Jamestowne in 1608 in the Second Supply; and served as the second Governor of Bermuda 1616-1619, where he died. However, there is no evidence to support that Daniel born 1575 was her father. (William Carrell, The Allen Family of Surry County, The Virginia Genealogist, Vol. 50, 2006.)

Arthur Whitehead II was born in 1649 at James City Co, Virginia. He was the son of Arthur Whitehead I and 1st wife of Arthur Whitestead (Unknown). Arthur Whitehead II married Mary Godwin, daughter of William Godwin and Elizabeth (Unknown), in 1671 at Isle of Wight Co, Virginia. Arthur Whitehead II died in 1710 at Isle of Wight Co, Virginia.
Arthur Whitehead II was a cooper and planter who resided at Head of Horse Swamp, Isle of Wight Co, VA. Arthur, who lost his father as a young boy, grew up illiterate, using “X” on his legal records. Arthur married into a higher level of society. There were two millers in his neighborhood, and Arthur married the daughter of the miller William Godwin.

Arthur's first land was apparently titled in 1670 and he acquired more from the Stricklands in 1697-99, slightly southwest of his original holdings. Arthur's land was inherited by his son William who sold the land in 1719 and moved south into North Carolina.

On 11 Aug 1673 Isle of Wight Co, VA property records noted Arthur gave his step-sister, Rebecca Thornton, married to Stephen Horsefield, cattle in a deed of gift witnessed by Robert Ruffin and William Gidis. Robert Ruffin was the only son of William Ruffin.

After that Arthur's life unfolded in a series of court records. On 9 Feb 1687-88 Arthur presented the inventory of Christopher Wade's estate, for which Thomas Godwin was a creditor. In 1699-00 William Strickland and his brother Matthew Strickland sold Arthur Whitehead 200 acres in Wight Co, VA as witnessed by Barnaby Macquinney, John Barret and John Worrell. Barnaby was Arthur's daughter-in-law's brother. On 1 Feb 1699-00 William and Olive Strickland sold Arthur 130 acres adjoining George Pierce, as witnessed by John Giles, John Chapman and Andrew Woodley.

In the Virginia Rent Roll of 1704 Arthur Whitehead was listed with 250 acres in Isle of Wight Co, VA. In 1704 Arthur Whitehead, William Johnson, John Bardin and George Pierce appraised the estate of John Cooke. On 9 Apr 1705 Arthur Whitehead, William Johnson and Henry Pope appraised the estate of George Pierce.

Arthur's 11 Jan 1710-11 will referred to his wife Mary, his executrix, and his main heir, his son William (husband of Rachel), thus it was believed he had only one son. Witnesses were Philip Rayford, Philip Pierce and Thomas Boone. (Isle of Wight Co, VA Will and Deed Book 2, p. 258 & C, 1, p.72-73, 11 Jan 1710/11.) However many researchers concluded Arthur and Mary also had children named Arthur Jr, Robert, Lazarus and Mary.

Arthur did have a son Arthur Jr., as evidenced by Arthur Jr.’s will, and his reference to his father, Arthur Sr., and brother William.

Patricius Christian1,2

M, ID# 3029, (1649 - 1687)
Father:William (Illiam Dhone) Christian (14 Apr 1608 - 2 Jan 1661/62)
Patricius Christian was born in 1649. He was the son of William (Illiam Dhone) Christian. Patricius Christian married Mary Nettles a 1674. Patricius Christian died in 1687.
Tim Barlow posted his research on 3 Nov 2011: "There is documentation that Patricius Christian is Gilbert's father. 1) Israel Christian was widely known to be Gilbert's nephew. Israel was one of the witnesses to John Christian's will (Gilbert's son), he was listed as a cousin of Capt William Christian (Gilbert's son) for the Council of War during the French & Indian War. 2) Israel Christian was listed as one of the children of William Christian written in his will. An abstract was written down before the Irish records were burned in the early 1900's. This William was reported to be the son of Patricius. An abstract of Patricius' will was recorded in a volume in the Church of Ireland (Protestant) Library in Dublin which I have viewed there and it does in fact list William. Also lists a Mary and a "child that my wife is carrying" (para phrased) which is believed to be Gilbert as Patricius died suddenly & unexpectedly and the will was dated 1687. (That is the weakest link. However, all the other documentation points to Patricius and is confirmed also through his relationship to Israel. My great-great uncle Hubert Christian was told he was born in 1680 in Scotland which he included in his book on the Descendants of Gilbert Christian -- but that was only a guess that they were Scotch-Irish. They were from the Isle of Man. No, Gilbert was born in Ireland and the date was approx. 1687. I went to County Waterford & located Patricius' estate. At Lismore Cathedral, the Dean of the Cathedral showed us an old trunk containing an old register showing Patricius Christian had a prebentary at the Cathedral, a stipend, for certain duties at the cathedral while he pastored several different churches nearby. Bottom line, the preponderance of the evidence points to Patricius Christian as the father of Gilbert Christian. There are not many alternatives & I have investigated them. No evidence at all points to anyone else." http://boards.ancestry.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=11&p=localities.britisles.iom.general.
