Martha Wheat1

F, ID# 3192, (c 1811 - b 18 Aug 1860)
Father:John Wheat (a 1775 - )
Mother:Elisabeth (Unknown) (1775 - )
Martha Wheat was born c 1811 at North Carolina. She was the daughter of John Wheat and Elisabeth (Unknown). Martha Wheat married Frederick Willoughby on 16 Sep 1834 at Morgan Co, Georgia. Martha Wheat died b 18 Aug 1860 at Alabama.
Martha Wheat is believed to be the sister of Edmund and Jonathan Wheat. In 1850 Frederick Willoughby and his wife Martha resided in Chambers Co, AL with their children and Martha's apparent mother Elizabeth Wheat and brother Zino Wheat, a carpenter. No further information was found about Zino, so he may be a The children -- Jonathan age 14, Hester age 12, Mary age 10 and Eliza age 8 -- were all attending school and Frederick's property was valued at $600. Next door was the household of Frederick's brother James Willoughby and six doors away her brother Edmund was residing with his family in the home of Margaret Nixon. Next door to Edmund was Aram Gardener age 45, his wife Ann J. age 43, both born in North Carolina, and their family including a 14-year old son named Willoughby, born about the time Martha Wheat married Frederick Willoughby. So there is the potential Margaret Nixon and Ann J. Gardner have a familial relationship to the Wheats as older siblings.

By 1860 the family was living in Randolph Co, AL where Frederick worked as a carpenter, and Martha was deceased.

In 2019 the numerous strong atDNA matches among descendants of the Jonathan Wheat line and the Martha Wheat line indicated Jonathan and Martha were possibly siblings. Segment triangulations to verify this relationship have not yet been identified. Supporting this theory is Martha named her first son Jonathan, and her brother Jonathan named a daughter Martha.

Elisabeth (Unknown)1

Charts:Virginia Custis Winslett lineage
Amanda Ola Weathers lineage
Elisabeth (Unknown) was born in 1775 at Virginia. She married John Wheat, son of Unknown Wheat, a 1800.
Elisabeth Wheat was noted as age 80, born in Virginia, and unable to read and write on the 1850 Chambers Co, AL census. Elisabeth was residing in the household of her presumed daughter Martha Willoughby.

Zino Wheat was a carpenter age 33 and born about 1817 in North Carolina, as was Martha and her siblings, who was enumerated in the same househould as Martha Wheat Willoughby and her mother Elizabeth Wheat in 1850 in Chambers Co, AL. He was possibly visiting when the census taker arrived. He was also enumerated as Zeno Wheat, age 19 to 45, on the 1850 state census in Chambers Co living alone. On 1 Jan 1859 Zeno acquired 40 acres in Randolph Co, AL.

Elizabeth Wheat is believed to be the wife of John Wheat living in Guilford Co, NC in 1830, the 60 - 69 year old female in the household. Zeno, who would have been about age 13 in 1830, was not in the Guilford Co household, and Elizabeth would have been 46 years old when Zeno was conceived. So how Zeno Wheat fits into the Wheat family is unknown.

Pvt. Moses Wesley Duke1

M, ID# 3204, (a 1835 - 19 Mar 1897)
Father:Elias Duke (c 1785 - b 1840)
Mother:Emily "Milly" Francis Elkins (c 1786 - a 1860)
Pvt. Moses Wesley Duke was born a 1835. He was the son of Elias Duke and Emily "Milly" Francis Elkins. Pvt. Moses Wesley Duke married Nancy Cooke a 1863. Pvt. Moses Wesley Duke died on 19 Mar 1897 at Laurndene Station, Mobile Co, Alabama.
Moses Wesley Duke served in Company G, 12th Regiment, Alabama Infantry in the Civil War.

Wesley was listed on the 1866 Alabama state census with a son and daughter under age 10 and his wife. He was enumerated on the 1870 Smith Co, MS census as Westley Dake with a daughter age 3 and his wife. By 1880 he was on the Mobile Co, AL census as Wesley Dukes with his wife and children. Both censuses show Wesley was born in South Carolina about 1734-35. However Wesley's presumed parents Elias and Emily Dukes moved to Alabama some time between 1823 and 1830, so if Wesley is Elias' son Wesley did not understand his older siblings were born in South Carolina but he was born in Alabama. Supporting the supposition Wesley was their son, Emily Duke was shown as a widow on the 1840 Clarke Co, AL with a new son in the household.

Wesley was also presumed to be the son of Elias and Emily Duke based on strong atDNA matches shared in 2018 between the families of Moses' descendants and the descendants of Elias' other children:

-- The relationship was confirmed by an autosomal triangulated group on GEDmatch consisting of: John Steadham GEDmatch Kit# T451421, Jarrod Winslett GEDmatch Kit# A032174, and Kristina Aslinger GEDmatch Kit# A331116 who share a 21.8 cM segment on chromosome 19 for an in-common length of 10,929,695 base pairs and 1,600 SNPs. Based on documented family trees John and Jarrod are 4th cousins twice removed; John and Kristina are 3rd cousins once removed; and Jarrod and Kristina are 3rd cousins three times removed. The most recent common ancestors of John, Jarrod and Kristina are Elias Dukes and Emily Elkins, the 3rd great grandparents of John and the 5th great grandparents of Jarrod and 2nd great grandparents of Kristina.

-- The relationship was also confirmed by an autosomal triangulated group on GEDmatch consisting of: Gerald Dukes GEDmatch Kit# A682399, Jarrod Winslett GEDmatch Kit# A032174, and Billie Aslinger GEDmatch Kit# A225631 who share a 22.3 cM segment on chromosome 19 for an in-common length of 11,222,748 base pairs and 1,717 SNPs. Gerald and Jarrod are 4th cousins twice removed; Gerald and Billie are 3rd cousins once removed; Jarrod and Billie are 3rd cousins three times removed. The most recent common ancestors of Gerald, Jarrod and Billie based on documented family trees are Elias Dukes and Emily Elkins, the 3rd great grandparents of Gerald and the 5th great grandparents of Jarrod and 2nd great grandparents of Billie.

In 1900 Nancy Dukes stated she had nine children, hence the Cotney age 3 on the 1870 census and the Cortney age 11 on the 1880 census are believed to be two different daughters. Also residing in the household in 1900 were her twin daughters Hattie and Hettie Dukes, ages 27, and her granddaughter Olivia Dukes age 5.
