Duncan Campbell was born a 1585. He married Mary McCoy a 1612. Duncan Campbell immigrated c 1612 to Ireland. He was buried at Inveraray, Argyll Co, Scotland.
Duncan Campbell left Inverary, Scotland in about 1612 when he purchased land in Ulster, Ireland. Considerable, likely impossible research to verify Duncan's ancestors, starting with his possible parents Rev Dougal Campbell and Annabella Hamilton, would need to be done. Duncan's purported illustrious ancestors noted in the Wallace-Frierson book and also stored separately in a project outside our family genealogy database would connect us to our illustrious 29th great grandparents, some with single names proceeded by the title King and many noted in wikipedia.

John Campbell I1,2,3

M, ID# 3484, (16 Nov 1674 - )
Father:Andrew Campbell3 (a 1648 - )
Charts:Susan Paulding Ruff * lineage
John Campbell I was born on 16 Nov 1674 at Kilmacrenan, Letterkenny, Co Donegal, Irish Republic. He was the son of Andrew Campbell.3 John Campbell I married Grissell "Grace" Hay, daughter of Patrick Hay Esq and Catherine Gillis, c 1695 at Ireland. John Campbell I immigrated in 1726 to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died at Augusta Co, Virginia. His estate was probated on 25 Sep 1741 at Orange Co, Virginia.
John Campbell was born on the Drumaboden Estate, north of Letterkenny, Ireland. He is variously described as coming from Drumboden or Drumaboden, Kilmachrenan or Kilmacrenan, Donegal, Ireland. Drumaboden is a townland in Derry. Kilmacrenan is a nearby village southwest of Drumaboden Townland.

John immigrated to Donegal, Chester Co (now Lancaster Co), PA in 1726 with his wife, seven of their children and their families and settled on the Sweet Ara. John was an original landowner there and a member of the Pennsylvania Provincial Council. His family was one of the first to move into Orange Co, VA (now present day Augusta Co, VA) in 1733 along with the family of Gilbert Christian. He and his sons were original landowners in the Beverley Manor Patent.

John's ancestors, of which none are yet definitively proven, are reported in three sources. The first source is a letter written by a direct line Campbell descendant, Gov David Campbell, in the 1840s vaguely documenting family lineage covering four generations between the 1590s and the immigrant John Campbell (born 1674) without benefit of dates, places and additional family members; never once does this man, a Virginia governor, state how he knew this information about his family, but it was reported he had a great deal of interest in and correspondence concerning his ancestors. Of importance is reaching a conclusion as to whether the data is correct is that mathmatically the lineage he offers of the four generations would fit perfectly and thus his data becomes more credible. The following note is in Governor David Campbell's handwriting: "The farthest back the Campbell family can be traced is to Duncan Campbell of Inverary, Scotland, the place where the old Duke of Argyle and most of the Scotch Campbells lived. It was in the latter part of Queen Elizabeth's reign that Duncan Campbell moved from Inverary to Ireland. Not long afterwards, in the reign of James the 1st, when he had come to the throne, forfeitures were declared at Ulster in 1612, and Duncan Campbell bought a lease of the forfeited land from one of the English officers. One of his sons, Patrick, bought out the lease and estate in remainder, whereby he acquired the [land in] fee simple. How many other sons Duncan may have had is not known. Patrick had a son Hugh, and he a son Andrew. The generations from Andrew to our great-grandfather John [John Campbell husband of Grace Hay] are not stated. It should be to Duncan, father of John Campbell, [I believe the writer meant from the original Duncan down to John the immigrant, NOT that John's father is Duncan!] [who] emigrated to America with his family in the year 1726 and settled on the Sweet Ara river where Lancaster now stands in Pennsylvania. He [meaning John Campbell, husband of Grace Hay] had six sons, Patrick, John, William, James, Robert and David. Three - to wit - John, William and James were never married. John died in England having gone there with Lord Boyne and became [his] steward." http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=shinshaw&id=I1902 [Despite the above statement, families are recorded for two of the "never married" sons, so even the most recent generation reported has some inaccurate information based on current 2014 research.]

The second source for John's ancestors is the Wallace-Frierson book. The book does not include the lineage reported by Gov David Campbell above, nor does it align with the lineage reported in Burke's Peerage. The Wallace-Frierson book propels the Campbell ancestors into the early years of recorded history, based on illustrious lineages recorded in Europe to pass wealth -- titles and land -- from generation to generation or to record religious leadership. I do believe recording leadership and wealth occurred accurately and the Campbells doubtless were lucky enough to be included in those elite ranks, however it is difficult for me to believe and too time-consuming for me to prove our particular direct line happened to be the one through which all those said achievements passed. Nevertheless, I have included the Wallace-Frierson research in this database.

Finally there is a Campbell lineage provided in Burke's Peerage which mentions our immigrant ancestor. The Burke's Peerage lineage has mathmatical impossibilities in the 200 years that would be most critical to our lineage and as a researcher reports: "Many words have been written concerning the parentage of said Duncan, [John's ancestor] and much research has been conducted by amateurs and professionals alike. A number of theories as to the origin of said Duncan have been put forth in secondary sources, but none have been proven to date."

The ties to Margaret Stewart and her husband, Sir Duncan Campbell, the fourth Lord of Lochow who died in 1453 and from whom the immigrating Campbell lines appear to descend, are too tenuous to make at this time. Should the connections from Archibald Campbell through Margaret Stewart be proven the Michael Woods-Mary Campbell Family in America article has the additional lineage.

Anna Catarina Helm1,2,3,4

F, ID# 3490, (a 1754 - )
Father:Unknown Hellm / Helm (a 1723 - )
Anna Catarina Helm was born a 1754. She was the daughter of Unknown Hellm / Helm. Anna Catarina Helm immigrated in 1771. She married Jacob Ruff I, son of Johann "John" Ruff, on 20 Sep 1774 at New Hanover, Montgomery Co, Pennsylvania.
Anna Catarina Helm immigrated to America with three siblings -- Maria Elisabeth, Franz Nickel [sic], and Johann Franz Daniel -- in 1771 from the Rhenish Palatinate/Saarland/Birkenfeld area of southern Germany. Johann Franz Daniel was the primary immigrant in the sibling group. Finding the four siblings' parents by tracing the siblings in America has not been successful. The sisters disappeared from the records but the name Franz Nicol/Nickel/Nikel Helm appears from time to time in the Pennsylvania records. In 1773 a man named Johann Franz Helm and his wife Anna Maria Koch who arrived in the US in 1768 and married the same year and a man named Johann Daniel Helm with wife Sophia Magdalena both have sons in Pennsylvania and the first couple is the sponsor for the other couple's baby, indicating a close family tie between the two men. This could be our two ancestral brothers, Franz Nickel Helm and Johann Franz Daniel Helm, resettled in America, if Johann Franz' Helm went to America in 1768 and then left his wife in America to go back to Germany to get his three siblings. Regardless, none of the records reveal the men's parents' names.

Anna Catarina Helm also used the names Catharina, Catherine and Hellm. Tradition is that Anna Catarina had ten children with Jacob Ruff, however between her marriage and her death dates it was impossible to have ten children, so the ten children refers to Jacob Ruff having ten children total by his two wives.
