Edmund Wheat1

M, ID# 5341, (c 1803 - c 1883)
Father:John Wheat (Nov 1768 - b 1840)
Mother:Elisabeth (Unknown) (1775 - )
Edmund Wheat was born c 1803 at North Carolina. He was the son of John Wheat and Elisabeth (Unknown). Edmund Wheat married Catherine Charlo Lock on 4 Jan 1839 at Morgan Co, Georgia. Edmund Wheat died c 1883 at Alabama.
Numerous atDNA triangulations among the descendants of John Wheat of Guilford show that Edmund is his son.

Edmund stated on the 1850 census that he was born in North Carolina. The 1870 census for him was mis-transcribed to show the name Geo but the original record shows Ed.

Edmund and Charlotte's family was difficult to understand because the censuses varied on the birth dates assigned, Charlotte had children faster than the average, two daughters married the same man, and sisters married brothers.

Edmund was first noted as a witness on a 23 Nov 1827 Guilford Co, NC deed.

The Antioch Baptist Church carried Edmund as church member from 14 Aug 1832 until 5 Jun 1841. The church was originally on Little River, but moved to its present location in 1848.

Edmund was on the 1838 and 1839 Morgan Co, GA tax lists with his brother Zeno Wheat. (http://usgwarchives.net/ga/morgan/taxlists.html)

On 4 Jan 1839 Edmund married Catherine Charot Martha Locke in Morgan Co, GA where they were still residing in 1840 with their daughter Margaret. Also in the household were two female slaves, between ages 36 and 54, and their two likely slave children under age 10.

On 7 Feb 1840 Edmund Wheat and Job Jenkins served as security on a promissory note by Edmund's brother-in-law

In Mar 1843 the sheriff sold Edmund Wheat's 300 acres to settle the suit. The property was listed in 1843 as “where Edmund Wheat previously lived,” so Edmund must have left Morgan Co, GA about 1843/44 for Chambers Co, AL.

By 1850 Edmund was living in District 19, Chambers Co, AL in the household of Margaret Nixon, age 40, and was working as a miller in the grain - mill products industry. Living six homes away was Edmund's sister Martha Wheat Willoughby and his mother Elizabeth Wheat. No other records could be found for Margaret Nixon; although she was of the right age to be a sister, she was not born in North Carolina and thus is unlikely to be Edmund's sister. Three Nixon men were on the Morgan Co, GA tax lists in the 1840s, so Margaret may have been related to one of them as well.

Living nearby Edmund and his family in 1855 is a B.W. Trotter who may be his nephew.

Edmund has not yet been found in 1860. Edmund was on the 1866 Macon Co (adjacent to Lee Co) state census. In addition to Edmund and his wife, they had 1 male and 4 females under 21. By 1867 he was residing in adjacent Lee Co, AL where he appeared on the voter registration list.

As noted above, Edmund's 1870 census record was incorrectly transcribed to indicate his name was George, but the original census record clearly shows his name was Ed, not George. Nevertheless, the majority of online trees refer to him as George Edmund Wheat.

The war took a toll on Edmund and his family. By 1870 Edmund, his wife and their 7 children, all listed as white, were residing in a post-war mixed race household of 27 people (household 182, Lee Co) including S. Brim, a 65 year old black male farmer, the mulatto/black Stewers family of 4, white Moore family of 2, white Allen family of 5 and the black Johnson family of 6. Both B. Moore and Edmund Wheat were listed as millers. Based on another Wheat female living with a different Allen family in 1860, there may be some familial relationship between the Wheats and the Allens in the 1870 household.

While the 1870 household head is not listed, J. M. Allen, a medical doctor with real estate valued at $3000, is the only person with assets in the household; his 22 year old wife was E. J. Allen. All the neighboring families are black so the Allens may have been large land owners.

In the 1880 census Edmund stated his parents were both born in North Carolina.
