John Perry was born in 1804 at Belfast, Co Antrim, Ireland. He was the son of Isaac Perry and Mary Smith. John Perry immigrated in 1823 to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He married Margaret Custis Russell, daughter of William Slocomb (junior) and Diadamia 'Damey' Russell, a 1836. John Perry died on 7 Jun 1885 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was buried on 10 Jun 1885 at Monument Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
John Perry immigrated to Philadelphia, PA where he lived first on Lombard Street and later on Walnut Street, both of which are in the old part of town. John is not included on the Philadelphia 1810 census, so perhaps he was living in someone else's home.

A 11 Apr 1955 letter from John's granddaughter Madge Perry noted John 'was born in Belfast, Ireland and died in Jun 1885 at the age of 83. He was a manufacturer of linens, came to America as a young man, engaged in the textile industry and adquired the ownership of a mill. When he amassed a compentency of $50,000, he retired and my only remembrance of him was seeing him in a rocking chair in the sitting room at 309 South 12th Street.'

Several John Perrys immigrated from the United Kingdom during 1821 - 1823, all of whom would have been the right age to settle down and have a family after establishing themselves in the US, so it is not possible to determine which John Perry was our immigrant ancestor. The only John Perry traveling from Northern Ireland to the US was an 18-year-old ship's steward who frequently came to the US during that period. The only way to find our John Perry immigrating is to find him traveling with his brother Edward, if that is possible.

Mills along the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers attracted tradesmen and John worked as a cotton weaver. He engaged in the textile industry and then he and his brother Edward acquired the ownership of a cotton manufacturing business. John sold the business two days before the Battle of Gettysburg, thinking the Confederates were coming to Philadelphia. He invested the money from the sale in the Reading Railroad and lost practically all his money.

In the 1870 Philadelphia, PA federal census John age 65 was living at 309 South 12th Street with Marg age 55, Mary age 26, Marg age 17, Frank age 16 and daughter Sarah Dubbs age 23 and her son Charles Dubbs age 4 along with a colored girl named Sarah Major age 18. John was living there during the 1880 census when he was noted as being a gentleman; Jane Schattly was a servant living in the household in 1880. His 1885 death certificate notes the same address. In 1991 that townhouse was on a clean, quiet street of well-kept townhouse homes.

Margaret Custis Russell * lineage
Margaret Custis Russell was born illegitimate on 2 Mar 1812 at 'Highwood', Drummondtown, Accomack Co, Virginia. She was the daughter of William Slocomb (junior) and Diadamia 'Damey' Russell. Margaret Custis Russell married John Perry, son of Isaac Perry and Mary Smith, a 1836. Margaret Custis Russell died on 2 Jan 1906 at age 93. She was buried on 5 Jan 1906 at Monument Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Margaret Custis Russell's ancestry was shrouded in traditions to cover the truth. Margaret most likely knew her parents were not whom she claimed them to be (she was illegitimate), but she passed on numerous stories about her "parents." Her son, William James Perry stated to his son James Martin Perry, that Margaret told him she was born at "Highwood" in Drummondtown, VA and her father was Samuel Russell (he was in fact her grandfather); and her grandfather was William Russell (also incorrect.) Her cover story was she was born at Highwood in VA, that her mother was Margaret Custis whom she was supposedly named after (thus she could never mentioned that her birth mother was Diadamia Russell) and her father was William Russell (actually William Slocomb) and her grandfather was Samuel Russell who had a pension for serving in the Continental Army during the Rev. War. The only actual truth to her story was her grandfather was Samuel Russell who had a pension for serving in the Rev. War. Ella Virginia August Perry, our great grandmother, had a small portrait of Nelly Custis sitting beside her drawing room chair and used to tell her descendants we were related; Margaret Custis Russell is indeed the third cousin twice removed of Eleanor "Nelly" Parke Custis!

"Highwood" where Margaret was born could have been the name of a home; the area near the town of Hallwood, VA in upper Accomack Co, VA; or the town of what is now called Accomac. In 1786 the Town of Drummond was established; in 1787 the town became known as Drummondtown, and in 1893 the town became known as Accomac. Hallwood and Drummondtown (Accomac) are about 13 miles apart. The Russells and Slocombs in our family lived within 15 miles of Hallwood, but not in Hallwood itself. If Margaret was born at Highwood in Drummondtown, she was born in what is now called Accomac, Accomack Co, VA.

A strong, incorrect oral family tradition is Margaret's mother was Margaret Custis and her father was William Russell. In fact Margaret's middle name Custis was supposedly chosen for her because her Russell family had family friends and neighbors who were named Custis. Further the Virginia Eastern Shore genealogist Mark Lewis concluded Margaret's father was William Corbin Slocomb who later married Susan Aylette, but William's death certificat show he was less than five years old when Margaret was born, so he is her step-brother.

Margaret's granddaughter, Susan Perry, stated she was told by her mother, Harriet, that Margaret's grandfather had married a second time which prevented Margaret's mother from going home with her two children when Margaret's father was killed. It is true her grandfather remarried but that was late in life, and it is a convenient story to have Margaret's father "killed." The reference to two children, as with all the other data on Margaret's parentage, could be erroneous, unless Anna Russell whose wedding Margaret's mother Diadamia Russell witnessed was also Diadamia's daughter and therefore Margaret's sister.

Margaret Custis died of senility and bronchitis at 1927 North 13th St, Philadelpia, PA.

Rev William James Perry I1,2,3

Rev William James Perry I was born on 11 Jun 1839 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the son of John Perry and Margaret Custis Russell. Rev William James Perry I married Martha Harriet "Hattie" Ruff Martin, daughter of Rev John / Jno Satchell Martin and Susan Paulding Ruff, on 21 Feb 1860 at Charles Street Church, Baltimore, Maryland. Rev William James Perry I died on 12 May 1878 at Staunton, Virginia, at age 38. He was buried at Thornrose Cemetery, Staunton, Virginia.
Rev William James Perry's birth date was established by his son John, however there are also may references to a birth date of 6 Sep 1839, the same birth date as sometimes noted for William's wife. William obtained a master of arts degree from Philadelphia College.

William and Martha Harriet were married by her father Rev John S. Martin. After William was married to Martha Harriet Martin, George Fox Martin (1850-1923) remembered in 1923 their visit to his family in Lenni, PA: "My mind boes back to a time before the War of 1861-1865, the summer or autumn of 1860 ... when your parents lately married were with us...."

William was a Methodist minister who also ran and taught a small boys' preparatory school in Baltimore, MD in 1861 and during the Civil War. William stayed in Baltimore when the Northern Methodists took over the Baltimore churches to keep the Southern end of the church going after the split. He remained in Baltimore during the Civil War and moved back to Staunton, VA after the war. Among other places, William lived at Contees and Laurel, MD and Philadelphia, PA.

In a 22 Aug 1860 letter to his wife William stated, "I never told you, but I say it now -- my father is a native of that down trodden country Ireland; came here in his boyhood and married a Virginian. I never mentioned it because it makes my blood boil to hear that land and its inhabitants spoken ill of. .... Do you think you can like an Irishman? You need not be afraid of hearing the brogue for that I have never heard at home myself. You need not be afraid of having an introduction to freshly arrived relatives of mine for the few I have on my father's side have resided on this side of the Atlantic longer that he has." He continued in this letter to tell her about several of his relatives, emphasizing his lack of contact with them and his determination not to have contact with them. He seemed exultant that he "knew no relatives in the United States or in the world."

By 1870 William was noted as a minister age 31 residing next door to his father-in-law John Martin in Laurel, Prince George Co, MD where he had $6000 in real estate and $200 in personal property.

Apparently William and his father John were at odds and did not correspond for many years; William was disinherited and died after a long illness. On 12 Apr 1878 John S. Martin wrote in a letter from Staunton, VA that Mr. Perry was very low and they hardly expected him to live the week, however he became better and his mother (Margaret Custis Russell) and brother came to visit.

Newly widowed Harriet moved to 109 Vine Street in Staunton, VA where she appeared on the 1880 federal census with her four children. Two families were at this address the other being that of Amos Holln, a shoe maker.

Martha Harriet "Hattie" Ruff Martin was born on 6 Sep 1839 at Lexington, Rockbridge Co, Virginia. She was the daughter of Rev John / Jno Satchell Martin and Susan Paulding Ruff. Martha Harriet "Hattie" Ruff Martin was christened in Aug 1840 at Lexington, Rockbridge Co, Virginia. She married Rev William James Perry I, son of John Perry and Margaret Custis Russell, on 21 Feb 1860 at Charles Street Church, Baltimore, Maryland. Martha Harriet "Hattie" Ruff Martin died on 18 Jan 1923 at Staunton, Virginia, at age 83. She was buried at Thornrose Cemetery, Staunton, Virginia. Her estate was probated in Jun 1923.
Martha Harriet "Hattie" Ruff Martin's life has many uncertain dates. She may have been born 6 Jan 1839, 2 or 6 Sep 1839, or 6 Sep 1840. Martha was baptized by Jacob Gruber.

Martha Harriet apparently attended the Wesleyan Institute in Staunton, VA. A 9 Jan 1856 letter from her mother Susan from Baltimore was sent to Martha Harriet in Staunton, VA where she had traveled alone for school at age 17.

Martha Harriet was married in the Charles Street Church, Baltimore, MD by her father, Rev. John Satchell Martin, however, the date may have been 21 February 1860 or 1861. Martha worked as a teacher and lived in Staunton, VA; Contees, MD and Lexington, VA. In 1898 she wrote to her son Custis Russell Perry from 1925 North 13th Street, Philadelphia, PA. Her son John Martin Perry told his daughter Elizabeth that the Ruff family would do nothing for his mother Martha Harriet when she badly needed financial assistance. Her son Custis Russell Perry wrote that she died 22 Jan 1922.

Mother:Martha Harriet "Hattie" Ruff Martin (6 Sep 1839 - 18 Jan 1923)
Charts:Virginia Custis Winslett lineage
Custis Russell Perry was born on 6 Dec 1868 at Contee, Laurel, Prince George's Co, Maryland. He was the son of Rev William James Perry I and Martha Harriet "Hattie" Ruff Martin. Custis Russell Perry married Ella Virginia Auguste, daughter of Benjamin "Ben" Tappan August and Gertrude Ellis Shell, on 27 Jan 1898 at Grace Methodist Episcopal Church, Maryland.3 Custis Russell Perry died on 24 Jul 1947 at Dunn Loring, Fairfax Co, Virginia, at age 78. He was buried at Thornrose Cemetery, Staunton, Virginia. His estate was probated at Washington, District of Columbia.
Custis Russell Perry, who went by Russell, was born in Maryland where he lived until 1877 when he moved to Staunton, VA and started public school in the third grade. He had strawberry blond hair, a color which was passed on to the next generations. In Staunton over the course of the years he lived at both 109 Vine Street and 11 Saint Clair Street. Russell graduated after the eighth grade in public school in 1882 and then attended just over one year of high school where upon he passed all his examinations. In the fall of 1883 he went to Philadelphia, PA and spent about a year working in the machine shop and tool room of William H. Hart's Factory on Chestnut Street. Russell returned to Staunton, VA in 1884 and attended one year of the academic course at the Staunton Military Academy where he passed all examinations.

In the fall of 1885 Russell became a machinist apprentice at the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad shops, Mount Clare, Baltimore, MD where he spent two years in the machine shop and one year in the drafting room detailing locomotive and car work. He attended two years of the B&O Technical School for apprentices in Baltimore on afternoons and nights studying drafting, mathematics and mechanics.

Russell then won a position as assistant engineer in the Physical Laboratory which he did not accept because he also was selected for a promotion through the school to the drafting room. In 1888 through the influence of W. L. Taylor, he took a position in the drafting room of the Richmond Locomotive Works, Richmond, VA where he served as a draftsman detailing and designing locomotive and general machinery. Again through the influence of W. L. Taylor he secured a position as a draftsman for the New York Lake Erie and Western Railroad Company in 1889. In 1890 he went to Cincinatti, OH and then to St. Louis, MO where he contracted the grippe; he returned home to Staunton, VA to recover. His brother William James Perry gave him office work at forty dollars a month. During this period while living in Staunton, VA and also during his subsequent job, Russell lived for a short time in Susquehanna, PA.

Russell's brother William James next organized the Standard Brick Company making Custis Russell the manager. The business was successful in terms of making and selling bricks but it was under capitalized. The Staunton Development Company collapsed when the boom broke in the fall of 1892 and the ground that company had deeded to the Standard Brick Company reverted to the original owners. The Standard Brick Company was unable to raise the money to meet the final payments on its parcel and went into receivership.

In the fall of 1891 Russell secured a draftsman position with the Columbian Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company, Baltimore, MD where he did marine work designs and detailing. He also spent some period of time living in Staunton, VA again, before moving to Washington, DC.

Russell indicated he attended "four or five" years at the Columbian Medical College, Washington, DC, but he apparently was not able to graduate; if he attended the Medical College it would have been at night because he had secured a full-time job in Washington DC with the federal government. He is noted, however, in the 1940 federal census as completing four years of college.

Russell was appointed to a federal civil service position as a draftsman in the Ordnance Drafting Room, Naval Gun Factory, Navy Department, Navy Yard, Washington, DC in August 1893 where he drafted turret and deck mounts, guns and breech mechanisms. Russell designed and made most of the calculations for the K&K and Illinois classes' thirteen-inch turrets and ammunitions hoists. He was in charge of the Maine twelve-inch turrets and designed the mounts and hoists.

Russell married in 1898, and the 1900 federal census shows a black servant named Emma Reed, born in 1840 in Virgina, living with Russell and Ella at 610 G Street in Washington DC. This woman may have been the person Russell's daughter Virginia Custis Perry fondly remembered as her black Mammy.

In 1903 Russell was put in charge of the turret division where he had been working, supervising twenty to thirty men. In 1912 he became the leading ordnance draftsman and assistant to the chief draftsman. The expanded responsibility included general supervision of the blue print room, the shipping division, the photo division and the clerical force. In 1916 he was promoted to supervisory draftsman with the same duties above. In design and drafting work Russell earned about $4000.00 per year.

In 1919 Russell became the supervising draftsman for the Copiest Division, supervising fourteen engineering draftsmen and three apprentices. This division took the approved ordnance pencil drawings or photographs from the design section of the drafting room and traced them with carbon ink on linen tracing cloth to make the permanent file copy. The process produced a uniform style, form and arrangement in accordance with drafting standards and required a thorough knowledge of all ordnance designs.

The 1920 census shows Truston Smith, a male roomer who was a passenger rate clerk from the War Department, living with the family Russell and Ella.

In about 1922 after 19 years as a supervisor and 11 years with the same growing responsibilities, Russell's job was reclassified during an apparent conversion to a new federal government job classification system. He protested the classification and salary downgrade but there is no indication of the outcome. Russell retired about 1936.2,4

Elizabeth "Liz" Harriet Perry died on 17 Mar 1989 at Staunton, Virginia, at age 84. She was buried on 20 Mar 1989 at Thornrose Cemetery, Staunton, Virginia.
Elizabeth Harriet Perry was a great genealogist. Not only did she travel and do research, but she was a voracious note taker and correspondent. It is to her credit that we know much of what we know today about the family genealogy. As she struggled for decades to assimilate the data one of her cousins wrote her that it was "deplorable that our forebearers did not realize the importance of keeping records to hand down to posterity." Elizabeth was elected 30 Sept 1960 into the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia under the qualifying ancester Col George Moffett (case # 7077). She resided in her father's home in Staunton, VA.

Elizabeth attended Goucher College in Baltimore, MD where she was noted in the 1927 school year book.

Elizabeth died from an embolism following surgery for a broken hip. Her family antiques were divided at her death among her niece and nephews and included the following inherited from her grandmother Martha Harriet Ruff Martin's family: a round inlaid card table that was a wedding gift, two small rosewood chairs, a small chest of drawers, and a shaving mirror. The following were her antiques inherited from her grandfather William James Perry's family: two black straight Windsor chairs, a pair of crystal decanters, and a set of blue and white Chelsea china. Her extensive collection of genealogical records, research and original documents on many family lines was to be inherited by her niece Margaret Custis Archer Clark but was taken by others and the location is unknown; Virginia Winslett has copies of the portion of the collection pertaining to her family lines.
