Father:Peter McCabe (Jul 1854 - 3 Oct 1925)
Mother:Margaret Daley (Jun 1858 - 22 Aug 1925)
     Charles Michael McCabe I was born on 28 Jul 1895 at Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was the son of Peter McCabe and Margaret Daley. Charles Michael McCabe I married Helen Tighe c 1918. Charles Michael McCabe I died on 18 Oct 1954 at Cambridge, Massachusetts, at age 59.
      Charles Michael McCabe's original civil birth certificate shows a 28 Sep 1895 birth, although he never used that date. He was living at the same address as his brother Leo McCabe when they registered for the draft in 1917; of note they had black and red hair respectively. Charles was noted living in the home of his deceased father in 1931. Charles was working as a steam fitter's helper for the Mexican Oil Company in Chelsea, MA.

Charles served as an infantry private for 6 months with the 12th Reginent, Massachusetts Voluntary Militia. On 6 Oct 1921 Charles filed for a disability pension in Massachusetts and was issued a certificate of approval.

By 1941 Charles and Helen McCabe were listed at 30 York, Cambridge and Charles was still employed as a chauffeur (truck driver) and by 1946 they had moved to 73 Wendell, Cambridge.

John Winslut / Winslat I1,2,3

M, ID# 6692, (a 1712 - 3 Apr 1759)
Charts:Joel Harper Winslett lineage
     John Winslut / Winslat I was born a 1712 at England. He married Mary Buittle on 14 Sep 1737 at Binsted, Hampshire, England.1 John Winslut / Winslat I died on 3 Apr 1759 at Binsted, Hampshire.
      John used the name spelling Winslut at the birth of his children and John's and his wife Mary's deaths were recorded as Winslat. Life was very difficult for agricultural workers; the general state of the poor in Hamphire County where they resided was one of the most depressing in England. Agricultural wages were barely sufficient to keep a family at subsistence level. Many agricultural workers supplemented their income with spinning. There were last names spelled Winslett, Winslut, Winslet and Winslate in Hampshire Co and neighboring West Sussex and Surrey counties. Of note there were many other Winslets three miles away in Farnham, England contemporary to John I and named John, William and James who may have been John Winslut I's relatives and even possibly John's brothers given the similar naming style in the Farnham families:
-William Winsletts: William of Farnham who married Elizabeth Aylward in 1728; William of Farnham who married Mary Eyres in 1729; and William Winslate of Binstead who married to Elizabeth Staples in 1744. A William had two children christened in 1733 and 1744.
-James who married Mary with seven children christened between 1737 and 1749, including Samuel baptized 28 Mar 1749.
-another James, possibly the above James' son, married to Sarah with six children christened between 1770 and 1778;
-John with a son John christened in 1750;
-Thomas married to Hannah with four children christened between 1777 and 1783 and another child in the household christened in 1795;
-Arthur married in 1709 to Mary Sturt who died in 1727 and 1715 respectively;
-Samuel and Sarah married in 1788 with two children christened in 1792 and 1797.

Research by genetic genealogist Topher Sims on chromosome 7 from 1 to 10 MBP, which is shared between Betty Ann Winslett and Virginia Winslett, showed the segment was from our paternal grandfather Winslett, not our paternal grandmother. This segment is very old, likely created in the early 1700s in Scotland, and the segment actually runs from 1 to about 24 MBP. It is possible that going farther back in time this segment came from two ancestors in Scotland who crossed paths and had children who married. Part of the descendants moved to New Zealand/Australia and some stayed in Scotland or possibly migrated to Ireland, Wales or England. The American branch likely came via a single person to Virginia, again pre-Revolutionary War. It looks like three children of this Virginia family went two or three separate ways, possibly more. The segment then traveled to Kentucky, Maryland, Tennessee, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. In actuality two Winslett brothers from Hampshire, England were deported to Baltimore, Maryland in 1766; one disappeared from records and the other reappeared in 1770 in Georgia where he had a large family and prospered.

Edward/Edmund 'Ed/Ned' Joseph/James Murphy II1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9

M, ID# 6693, (28 Jan 1886 - 25 Nov 1972)
Father:Edward / Edmund J. Murphy (c 1852 - 3 Mar 1908)
Mother:Catherine 'Kate' Powers (c 1858 - 27 Oct 1935)
Charts:Richard Carl Murphy lineage
     Edward/Edmund 'Ed/Ned' Joseph/James Murphy II was born on 28 Jan 1886 at Scart, Whitechurch, Dungarvan, Co Waterford, Ireland.2 He was the son of Edward / Edmund J. Murphy and Catherine 'Kate' Powers. Edward/Edmund 'Ed/Ned' Joseph/James Murphy II immigrated on 13 Nov 1913 to Boston, Massachusetts. He married Cecelia Agnes Ahearn, daughter of Maurice Ahearn I and Bridget A. Barrett, on 7 Jun 1922 at Somerville, Massachusetts. Edward/Edmund 'Ed/Ned' Joseph/James Murphy II died on 25 Nov 1972 at Arlington, Massachusetts, at age 86. He was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington, Massachusetts.
      Edward Murphy alternated between using Edward and Edmund / Edmond as his first name and Joseph and James as his second name. At his birth on 28 Jan 1886, his name was recorded as Edmund Murphy, matching his father's name on the certificate (certificate #422, book 5, p 85.) At the time of his christening on 26 Feb 1890, his name was recorded as Edward Murphy in the Aglish Baptismal register, and thus it continued as he altered between the names for the rest of his life. He was registered as Edmond at the time of his immigration in 1913; and stated his name was Edward Joseph at the time of his marriage in 1922. At the time of his naturnalization in 1928 he used and signed Edward James as his name. He also used the name Ed and Ned likely because they were popular and Edmund was not.

At his baptism Edward's sponsors were Margaret Flynn and John Fitzgerald. A 1911 census lists Edmond/Edward Murphy, a literate farm servant, age 24 and therefore born circa 1887, living with his widowed mother Catherine Murphy, cousin Bridget Power, and a 19-year-old servant named William Flynn; all were born in County Waterford.

Hundreds of Edward and Edmund Murphys emigrated from Ireland about the same time with many coming from the same port. What makes Edward's travel record unique is that he traveled with two friends. On 5 Nov 1913 Edward departed Queenstown, Ireland with his friends William 'Billy' Kennley and Tom McGrath on the S. S. Arabic arriving at Boston, MA on 13 Nov 1913; he listed his mother's name as Kate Murphy and stated he was bound for South Boston. Immigration records note him as a 24-year-old laborer who resided in Clonderdon, Cappoquin (town), Co Waterford, Ireland; he was incorrectly logged as female and English which makes records searches problematic. At age 27, circa 1916 on his US draft registration Edward noted he was the sole supporter of his mother, which may be why he immigrated to the US to find more work.

Also of interest was a ham curer, Richard Murphy, age 40 and born in Jun 1860 in Ireland who was living in Somerville, Middlesex Co, MA in 1900 close to the Titus Woodworth family, whose daughter Edna later married a Murphy. This Richard Murphy was enumerated with a wife of 16 years Bridget and children born in Massachusetts named Ellen, Annie T., Bridget and Maurace F., the latter of which was also the given name of Edward Murphy's father-in-law.

Edward was working as a clerk and living at 35 New Hampshire Ave, Somerville, MA when he married at age 32. He worked at the A&P Grocery Store for a number of years. He was naturalized as a US citizen on 4 Jun 1928 and was living with his family at 23 Thing Valla Avenue, Cambridge, MA. When his son Richard was born in 1932, Edward was working as a driver for the Cambridge Taxi Company.

One of Edward's regular taxi fares was Jerry Hurley, who published the Jerry Hurley Trucking Directory, a reference book for shipping goods. In the late 1950s or early 1960s Jerry's will left the trucking directory business to Edward Murphy and Vincent Majesky, the latter whom had worked to publish the directory. The inheritance provided a nicer life for Edward and his family. Edward and Vincent greatly expanded the directory. Edward did the bookkeeping and solicited trucking advertizements.

While living in 29 Windsor Street, Arlington, MA where he and his family moved in Aug 1946, Edward died. His death was the result of cerebrovascular accident and generalized arteriosclerosis. At the time of his death he was residing at 29 Windsor St, Arlington, MA; he was buried at Arlington Center DD-284 12. His social security number was 024-01-1113A.

Edward/Edmond Murphy was a common Irish immigrant's name so it is difficult to untangle the records. A different Edmond Murphy, with the same father's name, traveled from the same area of Ireland in the same year to the US as did this ancestor Edward/Edmond Murphy: Edmond, son of Edward, of Newmarket, Ireland, age 19 and thus born circa 1894 immigrated from Queenstown, Ireland 23 Feb 1913 arriving 6 Mar 1913 in Boston; he had brothers Jeremiah and Tom Murphy and had never been to the US before. An Edward Murphy age 19 thus born circa 1888 with sister Katie immigrated 27 Apr 1907 to Boston, arriving 4 May 1907; they were traveling with Annie Powers, sister of Maggie. Another Edward Murphy born 1893 and died 12 May 1912 immigrated from Queenstown to NY.1

     Cecelia Agnes Ahearn was born on 2 Dec 1893 at Clashmore, Whitechurch, Dungarvan, Co Waterford, Ireland. She was the daughter of Maurice Ahearn I and Bridget A. Barrett. Cecelia Agnes Ahearn was christened on 5 Dec 1893 at Co Waterford, Ireland. She married Edward/Edmund 'Ed/Ned' Joseph/James Murphy II, son of Edward / Edmund J. Murphy and Catherine 'Kate' Powers, on 7 Jun 1922 at Somerville, Massachusetts. Cecelia Agnes Ahearn died on 8 Mar 1986 at Arlington, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts, at age 92. She was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington, Massachusetts.
      Cecelia Ahearne's baptism was recorded 5 Dec 1893 in the Aglish Baptismal register in Cappoquin, County Waterford, Ireland; her sponsors were named Michael Kennedy(?) and (?)llen Greaay. Cecelia's birth, marriage and death certificates and passport application do not show a middle name, however Agnes is included on her naturalization application.

Cecelia was age 18, working as a servant and living at Creggs when she emigrated the first time on 12 Oct 1910 from Queenstown, Ireland on the S. S. Ivernia and arrived on 27 Oct 1910 in Boston, MA; she stated she was going to join her sister Mary Margaret Ahearn in Hathaway House, Milton, MA.

Cecelia resided from 1910 until 1920 in Boston, MA. She was first naturalized, together with her sister Christina, 1 Oct 1919 in Boston, MA; their cousin Mrs. John Sullivan of 96 1/2 Foster St, Cambridge, MA was their witness. Cecelia was residing with her sister Christina at 1101 Beacon St, Brookline, MA in 1920 and working as a housekeeper when both women applied for passports. The sisters planned to depart New York port on the S.S. Columbia on 22 May 1920 to visit their parents in Ireland. Their passport application witnesses were Jeffery J. Murphy, a laborer living at 5 Parkers St, Charlestown, MA; James A. Fitzgerald of 14 Norwood Ave, Somerville, MA; and Eugene McCarthy.

Cecelia traveled back and forth to Ireland twice; one trip was apparentlly to see her parents and because her sister was going into a convent. Research from the 1820-1957 New York, NY Passenger Lists shows Cecelia Ahearn age 26, naturalized in 1919 and traveling with her younger sister Christina, departed Queenstown, Ireland a second time to return to the US on 23 Sep 1920 on the Baltic, arriving in New York, NY on 1 Oct 1920 where she was going to her cousin's Mrs. John Sullivan in Cambridge, MA.

At the time of her marriage at age 26 in 1922 Cecelia was living at 42 Pearl St, Somerville, MA. She varied the spelling of her last name and was using Ahearne at the time of her marriage.

Cecelia's second naturalization record from 1924 stated she was age 31 and working as a cook at 1101 Beacon St, Brookline, MA, the adddress where she had been living in 1920.

(Of note there was another Cecelia Ahearn, not our ancestor, who traveled on the Carmania from Queenstown in 1926 with HER mother Bridget Ahearn, the sister of Teresa Terance who lived in the US; however, this Cecelia was a US citizen and age 15 in 1926.)

Cecelia was naturalized a third time in 1959. Her social security number was 024-01-1113D. Her death was attributed to heart failure as a result of coronary artery disease. From at least 1959 to her death, she resided at 29 Windsor St, Arlington, MA 02174. She was buried 11 Mar 1986 at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington, MA.

     Edward Murphy was born a 1825.
      Edward Murphy worked as a laborer and was alive in 1878 when his son by the same name married. Because both Edward's son and grandson rotated between using Edward and Edmund in the records, Edward could have possibly have been an Edmund. Given that Edward married in Dungarvan and his children were born in Drumana and Scant -- which are all in County Waterford, Edward could have been one of the 4 Edward Murphys or the 12 Edmund Murphys on the Griffith's Valuation in 1850 - 1851 in County Waterford.

Maurice reenlisted the next day at age 26 for another five years in the same regiment, however he was discharged as a private at Fort Monroe, VA on 20 Jun 1886, put on the disabled list and filed for his pension a few days later on 25 Jun 1886.

Maurice, age 40, was on the 1901 Irish census at house #8, Craggs, Clashmore, Co Waterford with his wife Bridget and six children. He became a farmer in Ireland and was able to read and write and "speak Irish and English." In 1920 he was still living at the family farm. (Note there was a second Maurice Ahearn, a child who was the son of James and Maggie Ahearn, living at Curraderra, Whitechurch, County Waterford, Ireland in 1901 and another Maurice Ahearn, age 50, the apparent son of Patrick, living in Pilltown, Kinsalebeg, Waterford with his son Maurice.)

Maurice died at Creggs in Youghal. His widow Bridget filed from Ireland for a US military widow's pension 2 Apr 1931 based on his service in the US military and the pension was approved.

Note that Maurice Ahearn is a very common name in the US and Ireland and care needs to be taken in parsing the records among the various men.

Barrett and Maurice Ahearn I obtained a marriage license in 1891 at Lismore, Co Waterford, Ireland. Bridget A. Barrett married Maurice Ahearn I on 5 Feb 1891 at Knocknore Catholic Church, Lismore, Co Waterford, Ireland.
      Bridget Agnes Barrett was from Rincrew, Templemichael Parish, County Waterford, Ireland. She was able to read and write according to the 1911 Irish census. All of the ten children she had were still alive in 1911.

Bridget Ahearn is a common name among passengers traveling to and from the US, so care must be taken with assumptions. Key to differentiate among the Bridgets is our ancestor Bridget was born in 1865, until 1891 she was still a Barrett, and she had a daughters Cecelia born in 1893 and Bridget born circa 1900. For example, another Bridget Ahearn age 54 traveled in 1926 to the US with HER daughter named Cecelia to stay with Bridget's sister, a Mrs. K. Powers -- thus giving the intersection of our family names with the same names in a different although possibly related family!
