Richard Nottingham I and his wife Elizabeth, believed to be Elizabeth Haddon, were listed as headrights for Northampton Co, VA land patented 31 Mar 1658. Richard, a planter, took the oath of allegiance to be faithful to the Commonwealth of England on 30 March 1651 in Northampton Co.
He was noted as the brother of Robert Watson in a 28 Oct 1651 Northampton Co court order. Richard was on the Northampton Co list of tithables with 2 tithables in 1665, 3 in 1668 and 4 in 1671. He was Road Surveyor for the county on 29 Dec 1687.

Richard bought 250 acres of land in 1675 east of the headwaters of Mattawaman Creek, Northampton Co, VA. He styled himself as Richard (R) Nottingham Sr., planter, in his 24 Sep 1692 Northampton Co will: To my sons Richard and Robert Nottingham my 240 acre plantation where I now live to be equally divided. Robert to have the south side. They are to pay 7,000 pounds of tobacco to each of my other 3 sons, viz: Benjamin, John and William Nottingham. In case my son Robert thinks it inconvenient to live with his mother, then he to have liberty to seat on any part of his 120 acres. To son Robert a gun that was William Evans'. To son John my gun called "Tapscutt." To son William my gun called "Saly." To loving wife Elizabeth during her widowhood the use of my moveable estate and her part of the plantation and then to be equally divided by my wife, my sons, and daughters. Wife executor. Witnesses: John (X) Granger, Hanna (HC) Capell & Nathaniel Capell. Tradition says the sons Robert and Richard were twins, and because the home plantation was divided between the two sons instead of being given entirely to the oldest son, would indicate twins.

Father:Thomas Custis (of Baltimore) (1628 - )
Mother:Elizabeth (Unknown) (a 1632 - )
Charts:Margaret Custis Russell * lineage
Edmund Custis (of Deep Creek) was born a 1661 at Baltimore, County Cork, Ireland. He was the son of Thomas Custis (of Baltimore) and Elizabeth (Unknown). Edmund Custis (of Deep Creek) married Tabitha Smart Whittington, daughter of COL William Whittington II (Burgess) and Tabitha Scarborough Smart, c 1686. Edmund Custis (of Deep Creek) was buried at 'Deep Creek', Accomack Co, Virginia. His estate was probated on 14 Feb 1701.
Edmund Custis immigrated to the Eastern Shore of Virginia while under age with his uncle Maj Gen John Custis II. Edmund was the son of John's brother Thomas Custis, "formerly of Baltamore in the Kingdome of Ireland."

In 1690 his uncle Maj Gen Custis made a deed of personal property at Deep Creek Plantation on the bay side of the Accomack Co, VA peninsula to Edmund. The documentation noted Edmund had married a granddaughter of Maj Gen Custis' wife Tabitha Scarburgh, and apparently the young couple had set up housekeeping at Deep Creek. In 1693 Maj Gen Custis and his wife Tabitha deeded a gift to Edmund of 1,750 acres "for and in consideration of the Love and affection wee have and beare to our well beloved Nephew and Grandson Edmund Custis of the County of Accomack in Virginia aforesaid, Gentleman, and Tabitha his now wife our Granddaughter."

Edmund was named in his uncle Maj Gen Custis' 18 Mar 1691 will and given 800 acres at Deep Creek in Accomack Co.

Edmund's 12 Aug 1700 will bequeathed: "To son Thomas (under 20). To daughter Tabitha Scarburgh Custis (under age 17) 850 acres given me by my honored Uncle Col. John Custis of Arlington in Northampton County, dec'd, at or near Deep Creek. To Naomi Makemie, wife of Mr. Francis Makemie. To Robert Pitt. To Mary Anderson, my housekeeper. To Francis Makemie. To John Braodhurst. To son Thomas Custis and daughter Tabitha Scarburgh Custis balance of estate in Virginia, Maryland, Europe and elsewhere. Two children executors. Francis Makemie & Naomi his wife to act as executors with the advise of Madame Tabitha Hill, their great grandmother, during their minority . To my servant William Darter. Witnesses: Robert Logan, William Darter, Joane Thomson. Memo: 7th paragraph omitted by error & ordered to be inserted: To Margaret Robins, daughter of Arthur Robins, cattle. Codicil: To Francis Makemie my sloop called Tabitha. Wittnesses: Thomas Thornbury and Mary Anderson."

The lineage of Edmund's wife Tabitha Smart Whittington can appear confusing because Tabitha is both the niece and the granddaughter of Tabitha Scarburgh. Because of Tabitha Scarburgh's multiple marriages crossing generations, Tabitha Smart Whittington is the granddaughter of Tabitha Scarburgh and John Smart and is also Tabitha Scarburgh and John Custis' niece.
