A theory is the Woods family was Scotch of French origin, but that theory likely relates to the DuBois middle name in this generation which would indicate an intermarriage with the DuBois family in an earlier generation.

As posted on rootsweb online: Who are Michael du Bois Woods' parents? One source identifies Jean du Bois de Fiennes (1565) as his father and Jeane Brouessin (1570) as his mother. However, other sources give different information concerning Jean and Jeane. If such a connection is made, then the line can be followed to Eustache I de Fiennes circa 1055.

Elizabeth Woods1

Father:Sir Thomas Woods1 (a 1635 - )
Charts:Susan Paulding Ruff * lineage (#1)

Elizabeth Woods was born a 1659. She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Woods.1 Elizabeth Woods married Sir John Andrew Woods II, son of Sir John Woods I, in 1681 at Dunshaughlin Parish, Co Meath, Leinster, Irish Republic.1
Elizabeth Woods could have been born 5 Nov 1654 or in 1656 in Middlesex, England; Dublin, Ireland; or in Scotland. Pending completion of more research on this family, Elizabeth is believed to be the link to Sir Thomas Woods. As of 2018 Woods family researcher Cecelia Fabos-Becker stated our Woods descend from Sir Thomas Woods and his wife Anne Hoey, but whether the generation between him and our emigrant ancestors is his son or daughter who married a Woods remains to be confirmed.

Celia Fabos-Baker stated she believes the dowry for Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Thomas Woods, was not great. The dowry was probably only enough for a couple of sons to inherit enough property to be sustained as minor gentleman farmer-landowners. The middle sons had to find something else to support themselves.

In 1661, the main line of Craigie failed: the oldest son of Sir Hugh Wallace, Baron of Craigie was declared "fatuus" (imbecile, mentally deficient) and barred from inheriting title and estate. His three younger brothers were then accused by their father (who may not have been much more mentally stable than his oldest son) of trying to murder their father for an inheritance. The accusation was investigated and not proved but Charles II was taking no chances at that point. The younger sons were free, but also barred from inheriting and the title went to the oldest son of Sir William's oldest brother, of the House of Failford. This moved Sir William and his siblings and children up in rank and opportunities. The Woods then had a daughter marry into a lucrative, well-connected house in County Down--a mercantile house; a family that owned ships and ports. Michael, Samuel, etc. had not been part of a shipping family. They were raised farmers. I think their father died about 1723/4 and they inherited some money, but no land. With the aid of the Wallaces, they were able to move to Pennsylvania and buy land. The Wallaces, as the extended family, already had by this time "Wallace and Brothers" a mercantile house in Baltimore and ships of various companies were going around the ports of the Chesapeake loading and unloading goods and passengers and then crossing the Atlantic where they were doing the same things among the ports on both sides of the Irish Sea.

Sir Thomas Woods1

Mother:Mary (Unknown) (a 1600 - )
Charts:Susan Paulding Ruff * lineage
Sir Thomas Woods was born a 1635. He was the son of Mary (Unknown). Sir Thomas Woods married Anne Hoey, daughter of Sir John Hoey and Jane Parsons, a 1658.
Thomas Woods lived in Dunshaughlin, Co Meath, Ireland. He was incorrectly reported to have had an arranged marriage to Elizabeth Parsons to keep lands and the castle in the family. Thomas did own lands in and near Dunshaughlin which he held through his wife, Anne Hoey, as a result of her dowry. He also had property in Dublin, Kildare, and Wicklow. At least one piece of property was co-owned by the oldest son of the Hoey family and a son or grandson of Thomas as both men had to sign the deed of sale.

The principal seat of the Sir Thomas Woods family, however was not in County Meath, but near Naas, in County Kildare. Sir Thomas Woods was also in the area prior to Cromwell. The best evidence is he was one of the surviving children of the widowed gentlewoman Mary Woods whose husband was killed in the 1641 rebellion at his estate near Naas, leaving a widow and unnamed children. (Depositions of the 1641 rebellion at Trinity College, Dublin.)

Sir Thomas Woods is stated in accounts done by Irish researchers about this family to "have had numerous children" according to researcher Celia Fabos-Baker. He had at least two sons as shown in land records: John and Thomas. His son, Thomas junior inherited land and property in Dublin and County Wicklow and in the 1720s sold one piece in Wicklow in which he had to co-sign as seller with another co-owner, Sir John Hoey's oldest son.

As of 2018 Woods family researcher Cecelia Fabos-Becker stated our Woods line descends from Sir Thomas Woods and his wife Anne. Whether the generation between Sir Thomas Woods and our emigrant ancestors is a son or a daughter who married a Woods remains to be confirmed.

William Stubbs I was born a 1547. He was buried on 3 Jan 1639 at Redmarley D'Abitot, Worcestershire, England.1
Two William Stubbs died in Redmarley D'Abitot and were buried on 3 Jan 1639 and 25 Mar 1645 respectively. Stubbs family researchers concluded William II who married Julia was buried in 1645, however this William could have died in 1639 and the infant William Stubbs IV born in 1644 could have died in 1645; that the infant William died in 1645 is not likely the case because the 1645 burial was not noted as an infant. Therefore, it is possible William II who married Julia was the son of the William who died in 1639.
