Samuel Ellis served as the guardian of James, Rebecca, Elizabeth, William, and Mary Southall, the latter whom he applied for a marriage bond to marry on 20 Mar 1828. In 1810 Ellis families were living in Charles City Co, VA, from where the Southalls moved.

Samuel served as Clerk of the First Market and lived at 615 N. 8th Street, Richmond, VA.

Dasey Southall1,2,3,4,5,6

M, ID# 693, (c 1700 - 28 Jun 1767)
Father:Unknown Southall (a 1655 - )
Dasey Southall was born c 1700 at England or Ireland ? He was the son of Unknown Southall. Dasey Southall married Edith Barrett on 26 Jan 1720 at England ? Dasey Southall died on 28 Jun 1767 at Henrico Co, Virginia. He was buried in Jul 1767 at Amelia Co, Virginia. His estate was probated in 1767 at Henrico Co, Virginia.
Dasey Southall was known by Dacy, Darcy and D'arcy and Dacie. Dacy Southall of Ireland is noted in Crozier's General Armory as having a coat of arms consisting of quarterly gules on a bend argent with a martlet between two cinquefoils of the first; the crest is a rock sable. (Crozier's General Armory, Dacy Southall, p. 121)

Daisey [sic] and W. Gunne witnessed a 1 Apr 1729 deed by William and Susannah Bayly of Westover Parish, Charles City Co to Mary Perry of the same for 54 acres where Bayly lived. Dasey witnessed a 29 Jul 1729 deed in Charles City Co. He was a tobacco inspector at Soane's Warehouse, Charles City Co in 1733. Dasey was actively involved in the Charles City Co court from 1737 until 1746, frequently serving on juries and grand juries during that time. He moved from Charles City Co to Amelia Co and in 1747 he operated a licensed tavern or ordinary with food and lodging in his Amelia Co, VA home and maintained stabling facilities. By 1750 he was living in Henrico Co, VA where he purchased 417 acres on the James River between the mouth of Gilley's and Great Westham. Dasey purchased land on 4 Oct 1756 from William and Anne Dabney (Henrico Co, VA Minutes Book 1755, p.47). In Henrico Co, VA records of 1757, his place of residence is given as being between the mouth of Gillies Creek and Great Westham on the James River.

Some of the most careful records-based research was done by Benjamin Weisiger of Richmond, VA, a genealogist, author and Southall descendant, who used deeds, court orders and census records as his sources and shared his data with this researcher in the 1990s. Susan Shields Sasek has also posted a wealth of records-based research online at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~sassytazzy/index.html as well as family tree information in numerous places on the internet, such as http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=sassytazzy&id=I593 and
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=sassytazzy.

It is important to know that because of the dirth of records on the Southalls in Virginia, articles published about the Southall family in periodicals and books were not always accurate, especially those written by James P. C. Southall, Dr Southall of New York, NY and Stephen O. Southall, a genealogist and Episcopal minister living in 1938-1940 in Amelia Co, VA. These authors were confused at times by the replication of given names within and among the generations, causing them to skip generations, an error that is readily apparent when studying dates across generations. Nevertheless, in some cases the data they prepared is still the only source of information available to this researcher on a particular Southall family, such as John's son -- James Southall of "Milton," his wives and his children. Among the works faced with these issues are ones noted by Susan Shields Sasek:

John Christian I1,2,3,4

M, ID# 694, (c 1703 - 1763)
Father:Charles Christian I (younger son Charles) (c 1684 - 7 Apr 1761)
Mother:Elizabeth Hunt (1680 - a 1729)
Charts:Gertrude Ellis Shell lineage
John Christian I was born c 1703 at Westover Parish, Charles City Co, Virginia. He was the son of Charles Christian I (younger son Charles) and Elizabeth Hunt. John Christian I married Susanna Browne a 1723. John Christian I married Sarah (Unknown) in 1729. John Christian I died in 1763 at Amherst Co, Virginia.
John Christian I patented 3,926 acres in 1755 on Rocky Run and Porridge Creek in then Albemarle Co, VA [which became part of Amherst Co, VA] along with his first cousin James Christian, and William Brown (possibly his brother-in-law). John's family left Amherst Co after his death in 1763 and returned to Charles City Co, VA where they remained. With the death of John and James Christian, William Brown claimed ownership of the land.

In 1774 John's sons John II and Charles petitioned for forfeiture of the 3,926 acres of land to them, and in 1777 sold 933 acres to James Gresham, 507 acres to Henry Christian of Amherst Co, and 507 acres to Charles Christian II of Goochland Co, VA. The original 3,926 acre tract remained under litigation for the next twenty-five years as the sons and grandchildren of the original grantees began litigation to obtain their portion. About 1788 John and Charles Christian got William Brown to settle for 1000 acres as his portion, some of which was then sold to John Edloe, leaving the Christian brothers with a residual of about 979 acres.
