John "Black Jack" Custis V was born to Alice, an African slave. He must have been a bright, good-natured and attractive young man who merited strong affection and loyalty from his father John Custis IV. That Mrs. Moody, according to the terms of the John Custis IV's will, was to receive Jack's portrait implies the boy had also won a place in her heart. Unfortunately, Jack scarcely outlived his father, and master, dying the next year when he was eighteen. John Custis IV's dear friend John Blair inscribed these words in his diary: "September 19, 1751. Ab' 1 or 2 in ye morn, Col. Custis' Favorite Boy Jack died in ab' 21 hours illness being taken ill a little before day the 18th with a Pain in the back of his Neck for Wch he was blooded." Jack was the child of John's spirit, and the only child who had never proved a disappointment and who had never let him down.

The Levant or Turkey Company, was an English chartered company formed in 1581, to regulate English trade with Turkey and the Levant until 1825. In its widest historical sense, the Levant included all of the eastern Mediterranean with its islands, that is, it included all of the countries along the eastern Mediterranean shores, extending from Greece to Egypt. A member of the Turkey Company was known as a Turkey Merchant. Following a decline in trade with the Levant over a number of decades, several London merchants petitioned Queen Elizabeth I in 1580 for a charter to guarantee exclusivity when trading in that region. In 1580 a treaty was signed between England and the Ottoman Empire, giving English merchants trading rights similar to those enjoyed by French merchants. By 1588, the Levant Company had been converted to a regulated monopoly on an established trade, from its initial character as a joint-stock company. The prime movers in the conversion were Robert Offley's father-in-law Sir Edward Osborne and Richard Staper.

Robert Offley / Robarte Fley was a Turkey Merchant of London and a member of the Virginia Company in 1609, where he invested £112.10.0 in 1618/9. He was named Deputy to the General Court in 22 May 1622 by King James I, who later expressed disappointment and displeasure with the Virginia Company for not electing even one of his nominees for any office in that body.
