     Rev James Anderson was born on 17 Nov 1678 at Scotland. He immigrated on 22 Apr 1709 to New Castle, Pennsylvania. He died in 1740.

      Rev James Anderson was apparently the first American by the name of Anderson to arrive in North America. A Presbyterian minister, he became one of the founders of the Presbyterian Church in America. About 1738 when the tide of emigration turned toward the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, James was sent as an emissary of the Philadelphia Synod. Aht the home of John Lewis, he preached the first sermon delivered in Augusta Co, VA. This was probably the incentive that lead to the building of the Old Stone Church begun in 1740 and completed in 1747 near Middle River in Augusta Co, VA.

     COL John W. Anderson I was born on 5 May 1750 at Augusta Co, Virginia. He was the son of ENS William Anderson I and Elizabeth Campbell. COL John W. Anderson I married Rebecca Melissa Maxwell, daughter of Jesse Maxwell and Mary Campbell, on 12 Jun 1775 at Fincastle, Botetourt Co, Virginia. COL John W. Anderson I died on 13 Oct 1817 at 'The Block House', Scott Co, Virginia, at age 67. He was buried at Morrison Cemetery, Gate City, Sullivan Co, Tennessee.

      John Anderson and his wife Rebecca moved to Washington Co, VA in 1775 when it was still a wilderness. Their home was the "Block House," an old fort at the head of Carter's Valley where parties assembled to begin their journeys on the Wilderness Road. William Skillern's and Col. John Anderson's families were neighbors in Carter's Valley in southwestern VA for many years. John fought in the American Revolution. From 1775 until 18 July 1796 John and Rebecca added tracts of land until they possessed nearly 3,000 acres.

      That Elizabeth Anderson and Samuel Anderson were cousins, even back a couple of generations, is not certain; they were definitely not first cousins. There were two contemporary Samuel Andersons in Augusta Co, VA. Samuel Anderson and his wife Elizabeth Anderson executed an Augusta Co., VA deed in Dec 1788. Elizabeth also had an uncle James Anderson whose son Samuel married Sarah Young; this Samuel and wife Sarah Young deeded Augusta Co land in Oct 1788. Since both deeds were executed in the same time period, these are two different Samuels.

     Samuel Anderson was born a 1748. He was the son of James "Ute Perkins" Anderson and Elizabeth Perkins.¹ Samuel Anderson married Elizabeth Anderson, daughter of ENS William Anderson I and Elizabeth Campbell, c 1775 at Virginia.

     William Anderson II was born in 1756 at Augusta Co, Virginia. He was the son of ENS William Anderson I and Elizabeth Campbell. William Anderson II married Elizabeth Hinkson in May 1783 at Lincoln Co, Kentucky.² William Anderson II died in 1830 at Marion Co, Missouri. His estate was probated on 10 Aug 1830 at Marion Co, Missouri.

     George Anderson was born in 1758 at Augusta Co, Virginia. He was the son of ENS William Anderson I and Elizabeth Campbell. George Anderson married Mary Breedon on 12 Feb 1789 at Fort Defiance, Augusta Co, Virginia. George Anderson died on 29 Jun 1814 at Staunton, Augusta Co, Virginia. He was buried at Van Lear Cemetery, Augusta Co, Virginia.

      George Anderson was drafted during the Revolutionary War and served as a private in the Virginia Militia under Col. George Moffett of Augusta Co at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. George and Col. Moffett lived on adjoining farms at the time of the war.
