William Taylor1,2

M, ID# 1501, (c 1612 - b 21 Jun 1687)
William Taylor was born c 1612 at England. He married Elizabeth (Unknown) c 1638. William Taylor died b 21 Jun 1687 at Accomack Co, Virginia.
William Taylor is very likely the William Taylor who was among the 40 colonists who arrived at Jamestown in Oct 1633 with Edward Kingswell and his partners Roger Wingate and their families. They were on their way to make a settlement in North Carolina, the first attempt since the ill-fated Raleigh venture, but the vessel that was to transport them from Jamestown was abandoned, and most of them probably remained in Virginia. Kingswell devised his rights to Wingate, whose widow Dorothy devised them to Lewis Burwell. On 18 Apr 1648 a patent was granted to Lewis Burwell and Thomas Vause for 2300 acres for transporting colonists. As several persons who were headrights under his patent are known to have been with the Kingswell colony, it is believed that this list represents the entire group of colonists. Among the names are included William Taylor, Elias Taylor and Thomas Adams.

Although Whitelaw noted he married Mary Wise, Miles Moody found no proof thereof.

COL Edmund Scarburgh II (Burgess)1,2,3,4,5

M, ID# 1504, (Sep 1617 - May 1671)
Father:CPT Edmund Scarburgh I (Burgess) (1584 - b 19 Feb 1634)
Mother:Hannah Smith (c 1594 - a 19 Feb 1634/35)
Charts:Margaret Custis Russell * lineage
COL Edmund Scarburgh II (Burgess) was born in Sep 1617 at London, England. He was the son of CPT Edmund Scarburgh I (Burgess) and Hannah Smith. COL Edmund Scarburgh II (Burgess) was christened on 2 Oct 1617 at Saint Martin in the Fields, London, England. He immigrated b 1634 to Accomack Co, Virginia. He married Mary Cade or Harmer c 1638.3 COL Edmund Scarburgh II (Burgess) died in May 1671 at 'Hedra Cottage', Occohannock Creek, Accomack Co, Virginia, at age 53. He was buried at 'Hedra Cottage', Scarborough Neck, Accomack Co, Virginia. His estate was probated in 1672 at Accomack Co, Virginia.
Col Edmund Scarburgh II was prominent in Accomack and Northampton counties in Virginia. Edmund probably immigrated to Virginia with his parents. He was a witness in the "Accawmack" Court in March 1633/4 to a deed of sale of two wild cows by his father. In addition to a 28 Nov 1635 patent granted him upon the death of his father, Edmund received also on the same date 200 acres on the seaboard side in Accomack Co which had also been assigned previously to his father.

Edmund rose rapidly to a place of importance in Virginia, serving as Burgess from Northampton in 1643, 1645-48, 1652, 1656 and 1660-62; Burgess from Accomack in 1666-70; speaker of the House of Burgessess in 1645; Surveyor General of Virginia in 1665-70, King's Collector of quit-rents in 1663, and justice and sheriff of Northampton Co, VA. Edmund was arrogant, contentious and power hungry.

Edmund engaged extensively in maritime shipping and was part or sole owner of several vessels. His most important enterprise was the extraction of salt from sea water by evaporation for which he obtained a monopoly on the Eastern Shore.

Edmund took the oath of allegiance to be true and faithful to the Commonwealth of England as it was established without King or House of Lords on 25 March 1651 at Northampton Co, VA. He deposed 26 Oct 1653, aged about 34, that he had lived in Virginia 22 years, but was born in London and was a trader with New Amsterdam.

Edmund was a defendant in a court case in Northampton Co, VA. Author Ralph Whitelaw states that during the long and effective ministry of Rev. Thomas Teackle only one cloud overshadowed his good name, and there is reason to believe it was only a mental one in the mind of the brilliant but erratic Edmund Scarburgh. On 28 May 1656 Teackle, age 27, filed a petition with the Northampton Court assembled at Occahannock, VA stating he was under several reproaches undeservedly cast upon him by Col. Edmund Scarburgh concerning an act of fornication with Scarburgh's wife Mary, age 46, and attempting to take away Scarburgh's life by poison. Teackle was about to depart under this cloud of infamy and requested the court to seriously examine the matter and give reparations as they found needful. Scarburgh never proved anything against Teackle. The county commissioners referred the case to the Governor and Council at James City. Scarburgh then withdrew the first charge of fornication. Whether or not the matter ever had a further airing at James City is unknown as there is no reference to it in the few extant General Court records. On 25 June 1656, upon the petition of thirty-five of his parishioners of Nuswattocks Parish, the Court ruled Teackle be pleased to continue "to officiate in his ministry having good reason to believe him to be of honest behavior since his residence in this country, which causes us to continue our good opinion notwithstanding the calumnious reproach cast up him."

Edmund's next escapade was attempting to annex part of Maryland for Virginia. On 6 Nov 1661 Maryland Governor Calvert's Commision for Settling the Eastern Shore assigned Edmund Scarburgh, Randall Revell and John Elzey to grant land warrants for people settling on the Eastern Shore below the Choptank River. On 10 Nov 1663 Scarburgh reported to the Accomack Co, VA court -- whose seven principles included Scarburgh's sons-in-law LTC John West and Devereux Browne, his brother-in-law Col John Wise, and Major Edmund Bowman, who was possibly also aligned with the Scarburgh family by marriage – that the situation in that area was insecure. The court ordered Col Scarburgh, Randall Revell, William Boseman and John Rhodes to lead Manokin residents in defending themselves. Many of these men participating in these developments were related to us, had military ties, were large land owners and wielded political power: Randall Revell, a Burgess, was our 12th great aunt's husband; LTC John West was our 11th great aunt's husband; Devereux Browne, a Burgess, was one of the husbands of our 11th great grandmother; Col John Wise was our 11th great aunt's husband; Major Edmund Bowman's descendants married into our prominent Custis – Littleton line; William Boseman was our 8th great grandfather's father-in-law; and as noted Col Edmund Scarburgh, a Burgess, was our 12th great grandfather. In Oct 1663 Col Scarburgh unilaterally invaded Maryland's territory in a failed attempt to annex the Maryland settlements at Annemessex and Manokin (now Dorchester and Somerset counties, MD) to Accomack Co, VA by moving a boundary point thirty miles to the north.

In his capacity as captain of militia and later as commander-in-chief of forces on the Eastern Shore, Edmund led a number of raids against Indians. He treated the Indians harshly and unjustly for which he was tried and by order of the General Court in 1670 he was suspended from "all offices as well as military and civil until by his future obedience and fidelity it shall please the Right Honorable the Governor to restore him."

Edmund's death was noted by Governor Sir William Berkeley in 1671. On 23 May 1671 Edmund's son Charles and his sons-in-law John West and Devorax Browne were granted letters of administration of his estate in place of his wife Mary Scarburgh. His estate was much involved and included land holdings in Virginia and Maryland variously estimated to be between 46,000 and 75,000 acres (as noted in Adventurers of Purse and Person, 3rd Ed, pp. 542-543). Devoras Browne was appointed administrator for Edmund's estate in 1672, but there was no order of qualification (Accomack Co Orders, 1671-1673 (iv), p. 188.)

In 1900 Lucy Weathers was living with Dwight Phipps whom she had apparently just married, although her first husband was still alive, and an assortment of relatives. Because Lucy and Dwight had just married Gray, Lola, Coke and Tom Phipps ages 16 to 3 were the children of Dwight's first wife. Lucy stated she had had four children and three were still living so Maud, Will and Ethel are most likely her children by John Brantley instead of Brantley's son's children with Lucy's sister.
