Barbara Ramey1,2

F, ID# 1801, (c 1737 - 12 Dec 1826)
Father:Jacob 'John' Ramey III (c 1710 - 1787)
Mother:Sarah Fryer / Fryor (1712 - 1745)
Barbara Ramey was born c 1737. She was the daughter of Jacob 'John' Ramey III and Sarah Fryer / Fryor. Barbara Ramey married William Whaley I, son of James Whaley I and Elizabeth Young, a 1771. Barbara Ramey died on 12 Dec 1826 at Bourbon Co, Kentucky.
Barbara Ramey was the mistress of her sister Lydia Ann's husband, James Whaley and had issue by him; Barbara and James were not married. After his death she married James' brother William Whaley.

This researcher believes Barbara's death information has been confused with that of her namesake niece Barbara Whaley born in 1757 because both are said to have moved to and died in Bourbon Co, KY abour 1826 although they were born a generation apart. The possibility that Barbara Ramey Whaley moved there in addition to her niece is sustained by the story that she lived there with her son Leland until her death at age 90.

When and where Barbara died is unclear. This confusing family account stated "Leland was a son of __[account said John]__Whaley, of Loudoun County, VA, where he [who? his proposed father William died in 1790] died about 1787; his wife [his father's wife?] was Barbara Reamy [she would have been named Barbara (Ramey) Whaley at that time], who came to Ruddel's Mills in 1795. The father [Leland] of our subject being the youngest of a large family, was born in 1782 and died in 1873. He remained with his mother until arriving at the age of maturity, when he took charge of the farm, she remaining with him until her death, which occurred in 1827, having passed her ninetieth year." The reference to Barbara being over age 90 at her death indicates the account was describing the death of Barbara Ramey Whaley, not her niece Barbara Whaley Talbott 1757-1825, but her name would have been Barbara Whaley, not Ramey at that time. Leland's year of birth may also be incorrectly recounted which would explain his birth occurring five years after his mother's average childbearing years; perhaps Leland was her nephew or grandson or the son of her namesake niece and a county or family history has confused the relationship between the two individuals. Another option is that there were three Barbaras living simultaneously in the same area given the reference to a father named John in this family story.

James Whaley II1,2,3,4,5,6,7

M, ID# 1802, (19 Jul 1728 - 19 Jul 1784)
Father:James Whaley I (1684 - 1749)
Mother:Elizabeth Young (14 Apr 1693 - )
Charts:John Satchell Martin * lineage
James Whaley II was born on 19 Jul 1728 at New Kent Co, Virginia. He was the son of James Whaley I and Elizabeth Young. James Whaley II was christened on 11 Aug 1728 at Saint Peter's Parish, New Kent Co, Virginia. He married Lydia Ann Ramey, daughter of Jacob 'John' Ramey III and Sarah Fryer / Fryor, on 26 Apr 1747 at Cameron Parish, Loudoun Co, Virginia. James Whaley II died on 19 Jul 1784 at Cameron Parish, Loudoun Co, Virginia, at age 56.
James Whaley II lived in Loudoun Co, VA and Fairfax Co, VA. James had a twisted tale of wives, mistresses and children. He married Lydia Ann Ramey and later kept her sister Barbara Ramey as his mistress, having children by both women more or less every other year from 1758-1764, having in total seven children by each sister. The children by Barbara used the Whaley, Ramey and Remey names interchangeably. After James' death, Barbara married James Whaley's brother.

The church held parents responsible in court for the birth of illegitimate children. At a Circuit Court held 8 May 1758, "the Grand Jury presented Barbara Remy for having a base born child within six months past and James Whaley, Jr. for absenting from his wife and taking up with another woman & his wife's sister and having a base born child by her within six months." (Loudoun Co, VA Order Book A, p. 98) Thus James apparently may have had two mistresses at this time. James had six more children by Barbara and acknowledged them in his will, surnaming each Remy but adding to each name "commonly known as Whaley."

"At a Circuit Court held March 13, 1759, upon the proceedings returned against James Whaley for breach of the peace, the said James appeared here this day according to his recognizance and thereupon Ann Whaley was sworn against him and he heard his defense. On consideration whereof it is ordered that the complaint be dismissed and that said James be discharged from his recognizance aforesaid." (Loudoun Co, VA Order Book A, p. 208)

James Whaley II is listed on a 1761 Loudoun Co, VA titheable list of with negroes Tom and Jack. The same list includes a James Whaley who was the overseer for Col Henry Lee. The 1768 list includes James Whaley and James Whaley junior living together with servants Jack and Lucy. Separately listed is a James Whaley who was the overseer for Col Lee with 13 blacks.

James is DAR Ancestor #A123636. Although he did not enlist as a soldier during the American Revolutionary War, James was honored for his patriotic service by the Daughters of the American Revolution for furnishing supplies in Cameron Parish, Loudoun Co, VA to support the Continental Army.

James is said to have had a third wife named Ann but that was his wife's middle name and because his wife Lydia Ann survived him that is not correct.

Some confusion exists for this researcher regarding whether both Barbara Whaley Talbott and her aunt Barbara Ramey Whaley both died in Bourboun Co, KY about 1826. A third Barbara, another Barbara Ramey may had also lived in the same county and their family stories may be intertwined. Family researcher Janet Broadbent stated our Barbara died before 1819 at Indian Creek, Harrison Co, KY.

The parents of James Whaley have not been proven. As noted in Rev Samuel Whaley's "English Record of the Whaley Family and its Branches in America" published in 1901, Whaleys settled in Pennsylvania and of that line at least one moved to Fairfax Co, VA. The same source discusses the reclusive and well-educated Theophilus Whaley who came from England to Virginia twice, secondly about 1660 where he married Elizabeth Mills about 1670-1675 and had some children there. About 1680 Theophilus moved to Rhode Island seeking religious freedom. By 1710 he had an 120 acres in East Greenwich and after his wife's death moved to West Greenwich where he died about 1720 and was buried on Hopkins Hill. This source only established Theophilus had children named Joan, Annie, Theodosia, Elizabeth, Martha, Lydia and Samuel; in other words there was no son named James however people have connected our ancestor James Whaley to Theophilus in online trees.
