In searching for Isabell Higgins' parents in Maryland land patents and wills, the only name related to Higgins found is Michael Higgin whose will was probated in 1685. The will refers to a wife Mary; sons Michael and Thomas to inherit 250 acres called The Cage -- not noted in Worcester Co, MD land record extracts; and 3 unnamed daughters.

According to the book Old Somerset on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, an Isabell Egions (?) earned fifty acres land for coming into Maryland to settle circa 1665 when James Dashiell entered the county from Northampton Co, VA. The Dashiells and Mitchells were in the same social circles.

Thomas Dashiell I1,2,3,4,5,6

Father:James Dashiell I (Burgess) (c 1634 - Aug 1697)
Mother:Ann Cannon (1639 - Aug 1697)
Charts:John Satchell Martin * lineage
Thomas Dashiell I was born on 23 Apr 1666 at Wicomico Hundred, Somerset Co, Maryland. He was the son of James Dashiell I (Burgess) and Ann Cannon. Thomas Dashiell I married Elizabeth Mitchell, daughter of George Mitchell and Isabell Higgins, in 1686 at Somerset Co, Maryland. Thomas Dashiell I died in 1755 at Monie, Somerset Co, Maryland. His estate was probated on 17 Feb 1756 at Somerset Co, Maryland.
Thomas Dashiell I was a planter who resided in Wicomico Hundred, Somerset Co, MD. He served as Wicomico Hundred constable in 1694 and 1695; Somerset Co, MD justice from 1708 until about 1710 and again from 1715 until 1716; Lower House legislaturer from Somerset Co, MD from 1715 until 1716, resigning from the legislature to become Somerset Co sheriff -- a position he held from 1710 until 1713 and again from 1716 until 1719.

Thomas was a Church of England member. In 1723 he and Capt John Jones patented 50 acres called Somerset, which included the site of the Second Somerset Parish Church in Monie; Thomas donated the Somerset tract to the parish in his will. In 1723 Thomas served on the vestry, and he was also listed that year on the Somerset County tax rolls with his son Charles and six slaves.

Thomas patented 32 acres called Noble Quarter, 108 acres called Lott's Wife then Father's Care, 50 acres called Venture, 300 acres named Long Expected and then named Batchelor's Choice, 100 acres on Tyaskin Creek, 100 acres of Father's Purchase, acreage called Mount Alexander, 100 acres of Hudson's Purchase, 100 acres of Whitty's Continuance, and 1,000 acres of Shiel's Folly.

Thomas received 250 acres of Mitchell's Choice and Improvement from his father-in-law George Mitchell which he gave to his son George. This is likely the same land that was divided on 5 Dec 1729 when our 8th great grandparents Thomas Dashiell and Elizabeth [Mitchell] Dashiell, their children George Dashiell senior and Priscilla Dashiell, and Thomas Dashiell's former sister-in-law Isabel [Mitchell] [Dashiell] McClester and her husband Joseph McClester conveyed 250 acres to our 8th great grandparents George Downs and Margaret [Mitchell] Downs on 5 Dec 1729. Margaret and Isabell were sisters.

At his death Thomas had over 950 acres and 1,372.4.1 pounds currency. Among the bequests in his will, Thomas left his son Henry 700 acres between Tipqueen and Tyaskin Creeks south of the Nanticoke River including a portion called Becknam he received from his father; his sons Thomas, Henry and Levin 250 acres of marsh called Shiles (sic) Folly on the northside of the Wicomico River; and his son Levin land in Whitehaven town on the Wicomico River. He also mentioned his daughters and numerous other descendants. He bequested twenty slaves by name in his will and referred to other slaves as well. Thomas was also known by the names Dashiel and Dashield.

CPT William Whittington I1,2,3

M, ID# 1911, (c 1616 - 28 Sep 1659)
Charts:Margaret Custis Russell * lineage
CPT William Whittington I was born c 1616. He married Mary (Unknown) a 1636. CPT William Whittington I married Susan (Unknown) a 1638. CPT William Whittington I married Elizabeth Weston a 1658. CPT William Whittington I died on 28 Sep 1659 at Holland, Netherlands. He was buried on 1 Oct 1659. His estate was probated on 1 Jan 1659/60 at Northampton Co, Virginia.
Captain William Whittington first appeared in Northampton Co, VA in 1641. He was a captain of Northampton Co militia and a member of the court. William donated 2,000 pounds tobacco toward establishment of a free school. In 1647 he owned 450 acres on the north side of Massawadox Creek and in 1654 he acquired 800 acres on the east side of Stone Grant.

William took the oath of allegiance to hereby engage and promise to be true and faithful to the Commonwealth of England as it is now established without King or House of Lords on 25 March 1651 at Northampton Co, VA.

Whitelaw, in discussing the ownership of Accomac tract A54 (pg 806-7) states that in "1654 William Whittington was made 'Feoffee in trust and Guardyan to the Estate of Charles the Eldest sonne of Leiftenant Collonel Edmund Scarburgh.' " Among the assets at the time were "9 Hogsheads of Tobacco received for the Sale of a Tract of Land" (part of A37); nothing more was found recorded about Whittington as acting in that capacity and apparently the colonel soon took over full management of his son's affairs. Just when the event took place was not determined, but Charles married Elizabeth, the daughter of Richard Bennett who was governor of the colony during the Commonwealth administration, and she survived him." This gives further creedence that William's daughter Ursula was the first wife of Captain Edmund Scarburgh Jr., Charles' younger brother.

William had at least three wives and given the eight-year spread between birth dates among his three known children, each child could have been from a different mother, so this reseacher has configured them in that pattern especially because it was uncertain whether his last wife Elizabeth Weston was the mother of his namesake son.

William made a will on 4 May 1659 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as Capt. William Whittington. Intending to take a voyage to Holland. To my son William Whittington all my land in Virginia (excepting 300 acres on a branch near where Edward Gunter and Richard Clark live, according to my patent). To the child (boy or girl) my wife goes with, all my land in the Province of Maryland. To my dau. Urselie Whittington the 300 acres (excepted as aforesaid out of my Virginia lands). To my servant Jane Beaman 2 cows. To Argoll Yeardly one mare foal. For the use of a free school in Northampton County 2000#t. Residual legatees my beloved wife Elizabeth Whittington, my son William, my daughter Urselie, and the child my wife goes with to be equally divided but to remain in my wife's possession until children come to age if she remains my widow. If my wife marries then my friends William Waters and John Penewell to care for my children's estates, and my wife to have no benefit of my land save only that which I bought of William Taylor where she now dwells which she is to have for life. Wife executrix. Wittnesses: William Melling, John (J) Turner, Margaret Neale. (Notes by Jim Marshall: Elizabeth the widow of Cpt William Whittington married Cpt William Spencer, and the name of the unborn child is perhaps Elizabeth. Francis Whittington is the brother of William Garwood.)

His estate was probated on 11 Apr 1720 at Somerset Co, Maryland.
Colonel William Whittington II, a prominent and distinguished Maryland official, was a merchant. He moved to Somerset Co, MD by 1684 and settled in Somerset Co below the Polomoke River in the portion which subsequently became Worchester Co, MD. William helped shape the establishment of Somerset Co, MD and its destiny. Well established in the county by 1689, he was noted as able, trustworthy and popular. He was also a maverick who tried to annex part of Eastern Shore Maryland into Virgina. William was noted as a Jacobite and a member of the Church of England.

In 1689 Willliam began his civil career in the first of many subsequent county positions and was elected High Sheriff that year. During this tenure as sheriff he clashed with the provincial government over his strong pro-Lord Baltimore and anti-Associator views and a partisan endeavor removed him from that office in 1689. In 1691 he was appointed tobacco export tax collector. With the establishment of the royal Maryland government, William was elected representative to the First General Assembly in 1692 and continued as a member of the Lower House Assembly until he was elected High Sheriff again from 1695 until 1698. During his tenure in the Lower House he and John Bosman donated 400 pounds each to the establishment of a free school for 100 scholars for the province. William was elected a member of the Somerset Co, MD court in 1693 and 1694, and in 1695 he was Eastern Shore provincial treasurer. He returned to the Lower House Assembly in 1699 and in 1709 he advanced to become a member of the Governor's Council, or Upper Houses Assembly, until 1717. From time to time William also served in the county militia advancing from captain to major and finally as colonel.

William became an extensive Maryland landholder and owner of a large, valuable personal estate. In 1669 William owned 3,600 acres and he obtained another land patent in 1671. In 1702 he patented 1,000 acres in the Bogerternorton Hundred of Worchester Co, MD called Baltimore's Gift which he left to his children Esther, Hannah, William and Southy Whittington. In 1720 he patented another 190 acres called Middle More in the same district.

In his will William devised part of his Cedar Neck and Sandy Wharf tracts for maintenance, teaching to read and teaching the Christian religion to six poor children at a time. He also directed that his children donate to the county to help the poor. William's grandson namesake married into the Martin family.
