COL William Kendall I (Burgess) married Ruth (Unknown) on 29 Feb 1644 at Norwich, England. COL William Kendall I (Burgess) immigrated b 1650 to Norfolk Co, England. He married Mary "Marie" (Unknown) b Apr 1655 at Northampton Co, Virginia.3 COL William Kendall I (Burgess) married Susanna Baker, daughter of Unknown Baker, in Dec 1658 at Northampton Co, Virginia. COL William Kendall I (Burgess) married Sarah Custis, daughter of Henry Custis and Joan (Unknown), on 6 Jun 1684 at Northampton Co, Virginia. COL William Kendall I (Burgess) died a 11 Jun 1686 at Northampton Co, Virginia. He was buried at Northampton Co, Virginia. His estate was probated on 28 Jul 1686 at Northampton Co, Virginia.
After his first wife Ruth and infant son died in England, Col William Kendall I sailed as an indentured servant in the late summer of 1650 on the Peter and John with his new master, Edward Drew. Within five years William married Drew's widow Mary. He became one of the wealthiest men on the Eastern Shore and a key military, judical and legal figure there.

William was named in a 1 July 1652 court order at Northampton Co, VA for beating an Indian servant belonging to Kathryn and Lewis White after being ordered to do so by the Drews' overseer. William was an heir of his friend William Strangridge in 1654 and that year administered the estate of Thomas Chapman as Chapman's greatest creditor.

After his indentureship, William first made his living along the Eastern Shore as a merchant by buying tobacco from planters and selling it to London merchants. In early 1655 or 1656 he began to practice law.

William's first land acquisition was in 1657 when he purchased 600 acres on the upper end of Cherrystone Creek, Northampton Co, VA where he built his home. Later he bought and sold large land patents and when he died owned several thousand acres.

William, one of the foremost men of his time and was extremely active in public service. He was a lieutenant colonel in 1658 and became a colonel in 1671. William served as a justice at the Term of Court beginning in 1655 or 1656 at least through 1671. William was on the Council of the Province of Virginia at Jamestown and on the Quorum of Northampton Commission. He was appointed to a number of important committees by the governor and in 1679 he and Col Southy Littleton were commissioned by Virginia Gov Chichely to make a treaty with the Iroquois Indians at Albany, New York in 1677. In 1684 William served on the committee to rebuild the State House in the General Assembly at Jamestown, VA. He also served in the House of Burgesses from at least 1657 to 1684 and as speaker of the upper house of the General Assembly in 1685 until the time of his death the following year.

William deeded land as a gift on 1 Aug 1685 at tract N43, between Cheriton and Eastville, Northampton Co, VA. He gave 700 acres of this tract to his daughter Mary and her husband Hancock Lee, saying the tract was where they were then living. They were to have a life interest, and then the land was entailed to their daughter Anna and her heirs. In his will of the next year, William confirmed this gift and also left jointly to Mary Lee and one of his sons named William Kendall 60 acres and the "Tanne house." This was on the branch at the south and eventually became a part of the Lee Land.

On 27 Aug 1668 William released his rights to land at Golden Quarter, Northampton Co, VA. "Whereas I, Lt. Col. William Kendall, am possessed of 1,500 acres of land at Maggity Bay in Northampton Co, which is known as Golden Quarter, I acknowledge my possession is only in right of John Eyre, Thomas Eyre & Daniel Eyre sons of Mr. Thomas Eyre deceased, to whom the land belonged. I release all my rights in this land to them, except my rights as their guardian, until they attain lawful age. The eldest to have his part and the other two proportionally each of them as they attain lawfull age. Witnesses: William Waters, Wil. Jones, William Andrewes, Thomas Rideinge and John Michaell senior."

William's lengthy 29 Oct 1685 will and the four codicils through Jun 1686 provided property and slaves in Virginia and England to his children, grandchildren and step-children from all his wives, and his last wife received land at Hungars and property for any unborn child at Scotch Quarter on the Seaside. He gave 700 acres to his son-in-law Hancock Lee and 1,000 of his 4,200 acre Accomac Divident(d) land to his granddaughter Kendall Lee. He also left property to his Larrington, Eyre and Matthews step-children. He was buried between Eastville and Cheriton at the Eyreville estate. His will is on the internet at http://easternshoreheritage.com/wills/will_of_william_kendall_sr.htm. Of note, three of William's sons were named William, two of whom lived to adulthood.

Father:Henry Custis (1596 - 1661)
Mother:Joan (Unknown) (c 1599 - 1661)
Charts:John Satchell Martin * lineage
Sarah Custis was born in 1649 at Holland, Netherlands. She was the daughter of Henry Custis and Joan (Unknown). Sarah Custis married Walter Mathews c 1668. Sarah Custis married COL William Kendall I (Burgess), son of John Kendall and Anne Pleasance, on 6 Jun 1684 at Northampton Co, Virginia. Sarah Custis married Rev Samuel Palmer in 1690 at Northampton Co, Virginia. Sarah Custis married Robert Howson c 1710 at Northampton Co, Virginia. Sarah Custis died in 1716 at Northampton Co, Virginia.
Sarah is thought to be Sarah Custis, the daughter of Henry and Joan Custis. Sarah seems to have led a relatively comfortable life as she goes to court several times in the course of her life to protect either her assets or those of a husband-to-be.

A 1680 court document noted she had been living with the widow Watterson for a year. On 28 Feb 1680/1 Sarah Mathews, aged 31 years or thereabouts, gave a deposition that 12 months since at ye house of widow Waterson, where she saw ye said widow deliver to Jno. Michael some bills of Cole, which he promised to accept and give her credit for and she promising to allow him 500 pounds of Tobacco and cask for the same.

Sarah's husband Walter Mathews' will written two years before his death in 1681 notes she is to arrive in Viginia soon, and he wishes his crops and the rest of his estate to be cared for by his friends until her arrival. The referral to joint stock and estate in the Mathews' will implies Walter left Sarah and their five small children in good financial condition when she became a widow in 1683.

On 6 Jun 1684 Sarah signed a prenuptial agreement pledging 5,000 pounds English sterling to be paid to her husband-to-be Col William Kendall, merchant and attorney, binding herself to marry him. The documents note William possesses lands, tenements, hereditaments and slaves in Northampton and Accomack counties both of his own and those he has given to children and grandchildren. The prenuptual states by mutual marital agreement Sarah will never have, expect or claim any property of any kind including land or slaves from William other than the 300 acres where his first son by the name of William Kendall (he had two living sons named William) lives for her natural life. This 300 acres may have been known as the Bayside property. In addition, Sarah was to get no more than one-sixth of William's personnal effects. However, the document goes on to imply if Sarah abides by all aspects of expecting and claiming no more than is stated in advance of the marriage, she could stand to gain more upon his death. In fact, however, by Col William Kendall's 1685 will Sarah did inherit the 300 acres of land on which she lived and one-sixth of the other property. When William died in 1686 Sarah went to court to prove the will and to request to continue to live at the Kendall home until after the birth of her child and her recovery there from; she also requested access to the grounds and gardens for herself and her family and to be allowed to remove what justly belonged to her from the home. Thus, she apparently did not want to continue living there.

Sarah bought 375 acres land in 1690 at tract N52, Matchapungo, Northampton Co, VA from Thomas and Mary Powell, and two years later she and her then husband Samuel Palmer deeded to her son John Matthews by her first husband. Matthews and wife Elizabeth deeded 100 acres back to his father-in-law (step-father) Palmer for his life.

In 1690 Sarah, intending to marry clergyman Samuel Palmer, went to court to appoint four trustees to oversee her plantation property she had purchased and to continue the plantation as her sole property. After their marriage Samuel Palmer's 1708 will proved in 1709 left Sarah his water mill, three slaves, his still and a worm tub.

Sarah was named in her daughter Elizabeth Mathews' 16 Jan 1695 will as "my dear and honored mother."

Sarah proceeded her fourth husband Robert Howson, the Clerk of Court for Northampton Co, VA, in death and left no will.

William Kendall III, the posthumous son of Col William Kendall, is referred to in court documents as William junior. He is noted in this writing as the third of that name since his older step-brother was also William Kendall. Through William III a relationship is established to the famous Custis, Dandridge, Parke, and Washington families of Virginia.

A child apparently born posthumously of William Kendall III's second marriage to Tabitha Johnson was either a daughter or died in infancy.

In his Oct 1718 will William left his wife Tabitha 500 acres at Scotch Quarter (and then said land to pass to his son John and daughter Sarah); hawking, hunting, fishing and timbering priviledges over all his lands; and a slave handed down in the family for two generations. He bequeathed to son John 450 acres near Slue Cut and a swamp and 200 acres of Hogg Island; daughter Sarah 200 acres at Dolby's Branch; daughter Ann his lands from the School House to the Kendalls', Mathews' and Branch properties and her mother's wedding ring; and daughter Palmer 300 acres at Bayside. He also bequeathed slaves, jewelry and livestock and assigned guardianship of his younger children to his sisters Ann and Esther.

Charles Parkes, a blacksmith, willed his daughters 300 acres of land.

That Charles married Anne Nottingham is based on the 25 May 1698 Northampton Co, VA will of Anne's second husband Thomas Cowdrey, wherein Thomas named his brothers-in-law Benjamin and Robert Nottingham to oversee his will's adminstration. This information invalidates the long-held hypothesis Charles married Ann Lukers Johnson, and thus any connection to her Yearley, Flowerdew and Michael ancestors is also eliminated.
