     Capt. William Whitehead II was born a 1710. He was the son of Col. William Whitehead I and Rachel (Unknown). Capt. William Whitehead II married Peggy Lewis, daughter of Richard Lewis, a 1746. Capt. William Whitehead II and Abigail Bynam obtained a marriage license on 5 Jun 1758 at Southampton Co, Virginia. Capt. William Whitehead II died on 14 Jan 1765 at Halifax Co, North Carolina. His estate was probated in Apr 1765 at Halifax Co, North Carolina.
      William was presumed to have first married a daughter of Richard Lewis because William was one of Richard Lewis' legatees and William named a son Lewis. In a court order May 1744 the estate of Richard Lewis was divided among the widow, Richard Lewis, Jacob Pope, Wm. Whitehead, John Crowell, Mary Lewis, and Patience Lewis. The two young women Mary Lewis and Patience Lewis were made equal to what others had received before from the estate of the decd., Nov. 6, 1744, Aug. Ct., 1746. (Joseph W. William Whitehead conveyed land to Jacob Whitehead on 6 Jun 1750 and the latter conveyed land to the former on 5 May 1761. This land came into possession of William's daughter Martha and was sold with her husband on 12 Oct 1785.

William Whitehead and Abigail "Abba" Bynum, dau. of William Bynum, received their marriage bond on 5 June 1758. Wm Whitehead of Halifax Co, NC sold to Joseph Wrenn of same on 27 Feb 1761 for 33 pounds proclamation money 130 acres patented by William Whitehead 17 Feb 1737 (this was his father's original patent) on the north side of Looking Glass Swamp and 1 acre on the south side adjacent to where Whitehead's Mill stood, joining Abraham Whitehead, Pope's -- now Weaver's -- Corner, and Rainbow Branch. William and wife Abby of Halifax Co, NC sold to Moses Cox of Edgecombe Co, NC on 17 Jan 1764 for 26/12/4 proclamation money a 150-acre plantation on the north bank of Swift Creek adjoining Arthur Johnson, granted to said Whitehead 25 Mar 1749. Witnesses were Samuel Sorsby and Jno. Whitaker. Also William Whitehead and wife, Abby of Halifax Co, NC sold Samuel Sorsby of Edgecombe Co, on 17 Jan 1764 for 47 pounds, 10s. proclamation money, a 190-acre plantation on the south bank of Swift Creek, granted to said Whitehead by deed dated 25 Mar 1749. Witnesses were Moses Cox and Jno. Whitaker.

Capt. William Whitehead of Halifax Co sold Thomas Good of the same county on 5 Oct 1764 for 10 pounds Virginia money 100 acres which was part of 700 acres acquired by said Whitehead on 10 Dec 1760, on the north side of Deep Creek, joining Briggs and James Bondie. Witnesses were Wm. Haywood and Jacob Hilliard.

      On 14 Aug 1779 Arthur Whitehead sold William Brantley, both of Halifax Co, 20 acres on the north side of Beech Swamp which was part of a patent to (Col) William Whitehead of Edgecombe Co on 18 Feb 1737. The witnesses were Jesse Edwards, Jesse Haynes and Nathan Adkinson. (Bradley, DB 14, p. 168/237)

On 12 Nov 1783 Arthur Whitehead of Halifax Co, John Williamson, Temperance Whitehead, Jesse Joyner and Priscilla his wife of Northhamptom Co sold James Bryan of Halifax Co for 500 pounds specie 800 acres which was part of the land owned by Cullen Whitehead, dec'd, on north side of Deep Creek, joining Cooks Branch, and the lands of William Whitehead, Abraham Whitehead, Ro. Whitaker, George Hooper, Sam Whitney. Witnesses were Drew Smith, Joshua Manning, Thomas Joyner. (Bradley DB 15, p. 1291/274) On the same date they also sold William Whitehead of Halifax Co for 250 pounds specie, 200 acres on the east side of Deep Creek and 208 acres on the south side of Deep Creek. The tracts were joining Wm. Champion, William Whitehead, Coock's Branch, Beaver Dam Branch. (Transcription says 480 acres in all so original needs reviewing.) Witnesses were Drew Smith, Joshua Manning, Thomas Joyner. (Bradley DB 15, p. 1271/246)

The following deeds all concern the children of Arthur Whitehead:

1793, Petition of William Whitehead, minor son of Arthur Whitehead, dec'd, by William Whitehead (unknown who this is), his guardian. Arthur Whitehead died intestate about 12 months past, owning about 700 acres. The petitioner asks for division with said other sons of the deceased. Jacob Whitehead received 120 acres joining Wm. Brantley, Applewhite, Foort. Cullen Whitehead received 120 acres joining Brantley, Beech Swamp, (John) Champion. Wm. Whitehead received 124 acres joining William Brantley, Cullen Whitehead. Cardy Whitehead received 128 acres joining Beech swamp, William Whitehead. Lazarus Whitehead received 120 acres joining Beech Swamp, Rawls, Edward Brantley, Robert Barrow, Robert Brantley, William Brantley and John Pitman. Commissioners appointed were John Pitman, Samuel Pitman, William Brantley, Robert Barrow, Robert Brantley. (Bradley DB 17, p. 1272/606) This was a key document for establishing the ages of Arthur's children because William, who is believed to be the oldest, was still a minor at this time.


5 Jan 1804, Cullen Whitehead of Halifax Co sold Dempsey Pittman of same for 260 pounds, 580 acres which was a Granville Grant to his father Arthur Whitehead, dec'd, on the north side of Beech Swamp, joining William Whitaker, William Brantley, Jacob Whitehead, orphan of Arthur Whitehead, dec'd, Allen Foort's orphans, and Cullen's own line. Witnesses were John Carter, John Gunter (Bradley DB 19, p. 467/382)

11 Feb 1804, Wm. Whitehead of Halifax Co sold Bartholomew Barrow of same for 600 silver dollars, 116 acres which sd. William Whitehead inherited from Arthur Whitehead, dec'd, on the east side of Beech Swamp, joining the land of Cullen Whitehead (sold to Dempsey Pittman), John Carter, Cordy Whitehead and William Brantley. Witnesses were D. R. Slatter, John Carter, Henry Applewhite. (Bradley DB 19, p. 475/389)

17 Aug 1804, Cullen Whitehead of Halifax Co sold William Whitehead of same for 40 pounds, 19 1/2 acres, joining Cordy Whitehead. Witnesses were Samuel Brantley, R. J. Pittman. (Bradley DB 19, p. 453/370)

      On 21 Feb 1761 Benjamin Merritt, planter, and Sarah his wife of Halifax Co sold William Hadaway (Hardaway) of the same county for 20 pounds proclamation money 90 acres which was part of a grant to Benjamin Merritt in 1761 on the west side of Beech Swamp and Pocoson, adjoining the lands of David Hunter, John Pull, John Mottle and John Phillips. Witnesses were Jno Brown and Lewis Whitehead, her brother. (Bradley, DB 8, p. 498/79)

On 17 May 1769 Benjamin Merritt sold his brother William land. Benjn. Merritt and Sarah his wife of Halifax Co to William Merritt of same, for 5 pounds proclamation money 100 acres adjoining the lands of John Hardy, Thomas Loe (?), John Phillips and Wm. Hadaway, which was part of a Granville Grant to said Benjn. Merritt. Witnesses were William Branch and John Gunter. The deed was recorded in May 1769. Benjamin sold this land shortly before his move to nearby Nash Co, NC. where he died. His sons moved to Green Co, GA.

      On 5 Dec 1783 John Good and his wife Rebekah Whitehead Good of Halifax Co sold Alexander Loyd of the same county for 375 pounds specie 200 acres which had belonged to (her father) William Whitehead of Edgecombe Co, on the north side of Deep Creek, adjoining the lands of Lewis Brantley, Tempte, William Whitehead, Burgess, Pherebee Whitehead, Bynum. Witnesses were Kneel Miller, Erasmus Lee Tippett, Jessie Haynie. (Bradley, DB 15, p. 1201/151.)

      On 12 Nov 1783 Arthur Whitehead of Halifax Co, John Williamson, Temperance Whitehead, Jesse Joyner and Priscilla his wife of Northamptom Co, NC to James Bryan of Halifax Co, NC for 500 pounds specie 800 acres which was part of the land owned by Cullen Whitehead, dec'd, on the north side of Deep Creek, joining Cook's Branch, and the lands of William Whitehead, Abraham Whitehead, Ro. Whitaker, George Hooper and Sam Whitney.
Witnesses were Drew Smith, Joshua Manning and Thomas Joyner. (Bradley, DB 15, p. 1291/274.)
