  • [S34] W. Stratton Nottingham (1837-1932), compiler, Russell Family in Somerset and Accomack County, Virginia Records (Onancock, VA: circa 1930), to Virginia Custis Winslett, Naples, FL. About 1920 Stratton Nottingham started the full-time practice of genealogy and, as a byproduct of his professional research, began the prolific publication of genealogical compilations -- marriage bonds, militia rolls, land causes, wills and administrations. Between 1927 and 1931, he published thirteen volumes of abstracts from the court records of Accomack, Northampton, Lancaster, Mechlenburg, Northumberland and Westmoreland counties. His work enjoyed an enviable reputation for accuracy and saved generations of genealogists countless hours of research. Stratton Nottingham's untimely death at age forty-five robbed Virginia of an indefatigable compiler of genealogical data. This report was prepared for Elizabeth Harriet Perry (1904-1989).
